Hi all havent posted in a long time here. I have a question for all of you who use a esbit stove. Can the fule be lit from a fire steel or do you need to use a match or lighter? Thanks everyone.

I have one of these, and have tried lighting it from a Hot spark and gotten nowhere. I usually need to get some tinder going 1st and then light the fuel for the stove. I read some where that if you reduce part of the cube to powder you can light that to get the cube going, but I have not tried it yet.
Let me know how it works, I love this thing and keep one with my kit in the car. It may be replaced/supplimented by a home-made Hobo stove soon though. The hobo stoves I have made have worked great, and are very usefull, depending on fuel availablilty.

Thanks. I am getting the esbit tomorow so I'll play around with it then and more the coming weekend. I was wondering about that, scraping the cube a bit for the spark to take. It works for wet fire tinder.

If you use the military trioxane bars, you can break them into smaller crystals and spark them with no trouble. I've done this with my Swedish firesteel and haven't tried it with a BSA but I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know.

I just picked up some trioxane bars last week, I was curious to see how they would work in the stove. Figured that they were OK to have around anyway....
