I know he carried a plethora of knives, from stockman, to scout knives, but if Mr. Van was to partake in our little experiment today, what knife do you think he would have settled on for a year, and why?

I have no doubt it would be a scout knife!

The very first time we laid eyes on him, he had his old Remington scout hanging by the official brass knife shackle. It was a bit worn from being carried from age 12 or 13ish or so, through his teens, through WW2 in a sucsession of south Pacific islands including Guadacanal, and later through some years with some scouts who tested his patience with everything from AWOL to drunk on duty.

For whitling indian face neckerchief rings he would use a small 3 to 3 1/4 inch serpentine two blade jack, but he used a scout knife a heck of alot around camp. Toward the end of his scout master days he retired the Remington and replaced it with a Camillus similar to the one dad gave me for Christmas when I was 12.

If I had to lay money on what he had on him the day he passed from this world, I think it would have been a scout knife. He was almighty partial to the pattern. If he had come along a bit later, I think he would have been a sak fan, he liked the practical aspect of having a few tools around for firearm maintanence, and opening cans of V8 and Hormel chilli for the hot dogs on campouts.:)

Hmmm. Makes me feel ok about having to switch out my Peanut for my SAK. After all, if Mr. Van carried a few extra tools, and was a minimalist, then it should be ok.

OO-RAH!

Semper fi, ElCuchillo.

By the way, is everthing okay down there? We've been a bit worried about things, and Karen and I were talking. If you and your lady don't have close by family, we can be there in 16 hours if you all need anything or just some support.

Everything is going good, Carl. We are hanging in there. I guess the fact that our first child was perfect keeps us sane, you know? If this had been our first pregnancy, we would have been much more devastated. We're ok. However, if Karen and yourself still wanna come down, I know people in the parks (Disney), and you have the senior Gator wrestler at Gatorland to show you around! Thanx for the support, man. I tried to PM you, but couldn't. What's up with that?

Good to know you're all okay. its a heartbreaking thing to have happen. We wish all the best for you, and hope you keep trying. Children are such a treasure beyond all measure.

I'll have to fix the e-mail thing so people can get through. Sometimes the privacy thing can be taken too far. We're thinking of going to Florida this spring anyways, we'll see how it goes. We, (Karen, me, her sister Diane, and her fella Roy) are thinking about retiring on the gulf coast around the Sarasota area.

Cool. Hey, check out my website. Cool pics of my job and what not for you to check out.

Is this a trick question?

I'm the guy who moved to Trinidad Colorado in 1977 for reasons of job oportunity, and moved back to Maryland in 1978 saying the heck with the job, because I couldn't stand being away from the coast and the bay. If I don't hear seagulls on a regular basis, I get very homesick. From April to late October we're out in some kind of boat at least once a week, more likly twice. Kayak, canoe, sail boat. Fishing is at least a twice a week activity, with the catch ending up in a well blackend cast iron pan.

Since Karen and her sister Diane are native Texicans, we are also talking about the possability of Corpus Christy. Di has her daughter and grandkids in Houston, and I have VERY, VERY, fond memories of the San Antonio area where I spent time at Fort Sam Houston. Corpus in an area I'm familiar with as a weekend getaway when I was there. Great fishing and shrimping. And Karen and Di grew up on the Texas gulf coast. Right now we're looking and debating the pro's and con's.

I just know that we're getting to really dislike winter!

I have a friend who retired to Sarasota not too far from the Myakka river state park, and we did some great canoeing and fishing there too. Paddling through the swamps and mangroves were so very much like LaCompt Marsh in some ways. The Myakka river was very reminisant of the rivers on the eastern shore. Had a great time there!

Now you're talking my language. This park is one of my favorite places on earth!

Corpus is ok, but I prefer Galveston - and Galveston's closer to Houston. Seriously, though, if you're ever passing through the Austin area, let me know and I'll show you were the good barbecue is.

Been to Austin, nice town and good music. There used to be a place in San Antone down on Broadway called Billy's. Some of the best Texas style BBQ brisket I ever recall eating, anyplace. We'll have to see if you can show me a place in Austin to top it.

Any other must do and see in Sarasota? Looks like I'll be down there in March. I'm really looking forward to getting some saltwater on my pocket knives. :)

Canoeing in the Myakka River state park is a must. Great scenery, bring binoculars, great fishing. Just be aware of the alligators, they can be curious. We had one come up pretty close and eye the canoe. (Or the people in it, wasn't quite sure!) Watch your footing in the boonies and stay on the paths. If you venture off the paths, watch for snakes.

The beaches are great. Wide sandy and well populated with very nice looking scenery of a different kind than the Myakka. wear wrap arounds so the 'ol lady won't see you gawking.:D

The Barnum and Baily circus has thier winter headquaters there, they let us watch some of the acts practice.

Its a very nice area.

Jackknife,
Consider this an official invitation to join me out on the water when you're down here. I have a 20' center console boat and I'm pretty good at catching fish.
