Jerry, I remember in the article you wrote about care of ivory that we should soak it in mineral oil for 8 hours twice a year. Do you take the scales off the knife(if removable) and submerge them or just wipe them down with the oil and leave it on?
Also I seem to remember you said that ivory shouldnt be kept in a zippered pouch or if it was to keep it open so the ivory could breath. Is that correct?
Thanks and I'd appreciate any other tips anyone has on caring for ivory to avoid drying and cracking.

While you are waiting for Jerry, I use non scented baby oil (might be the same thing). This is based on a recommendation from one of the local museums.

Ren Oil also is a great one. I use it on my Ivory gripped guns and I just rub it on a couple of times a year until they won't soak up any more.

Do not soak, just apply to surface let set for a few minutes and reapply. Mineral oil will be the same a baby oil.
PS: Peter, what else are you using that Baby Oil for???    :D

Get to be my age it makes good patch lube!:D :D :D :D :D :o :D :D

Peter: If you have to use a patch after you lube, you are creating too much friction at your age. Ever think of going to a higher viscosity Baby Oil????   :D :D

I soak. I submerge the whole knife. I leave in there for a day and night. This has stopped my cracks and those that has used it. I just could not get it deep enough by rubbing it in. Your mileage may vary.

I also leave about a one inch crack in the zipper pouch instead of total zipped up. This allows no sweating.

Havent yet George, however I use very little of the stuff myself. But I know guys that uses the oil on my older stuff and it used epoxy.
