Question for lefties

Hi y'all, I'm a lefty who really really wants a PM2. Problem is that Spyderco only makes it in 1 color variant, so here's my question to my fellow lefties: is the standard right-handed PM2 usable for EDC? Is it possible to get used to it, can it be lived with? Thanks in advance!

I'm not a lefty.. But the pm2 has a 4 position pocket clip so it should work without an issue.

I'm not a leftie either, but the "leftie" PM2 is the only one I can stand to carry and use right-handed. All the others get switched to portside carry. I find it far easier and much safer to release the compression lock with the tip of my index finger in the Spyderhole and my thumb on the lock release than any of the gyrations and free-swinging blades that others seem to love. As far as I'm concerned, the "leftie" is the only "rightie".

This won't help you but I'm a natural born leftie who learned to be ambi depending on the task at hand wc, in my experience, lefties just have to be able to do to survive in a right handed world. For example, like using a can opener.

So, while I write left handed, I pretty much do everything else right handed, including opening/holding a knife. Funny thing is, when it comes to sports, I do almost everything right handed w/o thinking about it. Throw, hit, kick, dribble and shoot all right handed.

The only "sport" that I HAVE to do leftie is shoot a gun/rifle because I'm left eye dominant too and I shoot very poorly when I try to shoot right handed because of the cross-domininance hand/vision issue.

LOL! ;)
Very impressive Marty, good for you!

No no, I had very overbearing Asian parents growing up and they tried to force me to be ambidextrous lol. I have played the piano for many years and that made my left hand pretty nimble, though probably not on par with a natural born...

What were we talking about? Haha.

I have a buddy who hunts alot who is a lefty. When he retired I made him hold my different spydercos and he said the length of the handle made a difference disengaging the compression lock; he had a much tougher time with the pm3 than the pm2...finger gymnastics as David Mary David Mary would say. I ended up getting him a Manix 2 in S110V...

Hope this helps!

I am ambidextrous, and can use the compression lock of a right handed knife with either hand. At least the Shaman, Yojimbo 2, Yojumbo, and Caribbean. As long as it doesn't have that inexplicably large kick that nudges your finger when closing, which I always ground off of the Shamans that I have owned.

Are you a leftie too? The smarter 10-12%. LOL!

We who are "left handed" are, by our nature, able to perform a variety of working tasks with our left hands, and are forced by our environment to get good at a variety of similar tasks with our right hands. This cross training has to be good for the brain. ;)

Yes, you can adapt to a right handed PM2. The PM2 in my experience has a blade that free falls once the lock is released. That makes for a one handed operation.
I’ve gotten use to opening a right handed knife left handed and using both hands to close it. Sometimes I’ll l use my right hand to open and switch hands to use. If I’m ever in a situation where I need fast action, then I’m pretty much screwed anyway.

Lefty here; yes, the standard RH is usable/can be gotten used to/lived with.

The grip when closing isn't as secure, though, if you're closing one-handed. Closing LH has thumb on the smooth comp lock tab on one side of the handle, and all the fingers on the other side - you've really only got a good grip on one scale. Doing it RH has index finger on the tab with middle/ring/pinky gripping that side and thumb gripping the other side - grip on both scales. LH closing a RH comp lock has greater chance of dropping the knife when hands are wet/cold, in my experience.

Not a big deal IMO; I carry RH Para2/3 all the time and really like them.

Thumb on the lockbar tab, index finger in the hole to start the close, and then shift your grip and close it the rest of the way. One hand close, no problem. You might want to cut a detent ramp into the tang for this. It only takes a couple minutes with a diamond needle file.
