Mete, a friend of mine dropped off a number of pieces of steel that came from an old machine shop in the area. Probably been laying around for decades. STill clean and serviceable. I can't find any steel exactly like this even in the old Machinery Digest books.
It's marked Simonds Saw and Steel Co. oil hardening tool steel - C-.85-.95, Si-.20-.35, Mn-1.30-1.50, Mo-.20-.30.
The heat treat temper as listed is close to 01.
After reading about Simonds Saw and Steel Co on the web, I keep checking it to see if it glows in the dark :)
Any idea about it?
Thanks in advance.

I can't find anything that even comes close to that composition. Give it a try, it should make a decent blade.

Thanks, Mete. I just wanted to make sure. I searched a number of books that went back to 1936 and had the same results.
Nah, not for knives. I don't need to add another steel:) Most of it is 1/4" x2" and some is 5/16" x3". Great fixture stuff.

Kit,

No putting you on a spot but I see a blade use for a 1/4" X 2" X 12" piece. Reasonable cost plus shipping and handling is okay with me. If it ain't worth the bother it ain't no never mind to me but I wouldn't mind making a particular blade of it for a particular purpose (I was thinking of the one I will make for SF). The chemistry looks good and Mete seems to have signed off on it. Ain't no biggy but it does intrigue me. Another thing I like about it - it would be unique, which is fitting for this particular knife.

It's a fairly simple steel so shouldn't be any problem. Try it , you've got my curiosity up .

with that amount of Manganese in it it would make an awesomely black stripe in damascus.
