mete, I may have a line on some heavy copper plates for quenching. I was wondering what the heat dissipation rate of copper is compared to aluminum? Thanks.

The thermal conductivity of Al is about 62% of that of Cu.

In other words, Copper is half again as fast as Al. Go for it. The main reason I went with Al is cost. Al is much cheaper than Cu.

These values are for pure metals. Values of pure Cu against 6061 Al which I use, show the Cu to be twice as conductive.

That's right, thermal conductivity for Al is .53 and for Cu .94. So depending on price make your choice. You should use plates 3/4" -1" thick.
