The gentleman in this thread wants to know if it is legal or not to carry a balisong in Michigan. The law appears to be very vague. It states that you cannot carry a dangerous weapon. In your experience is it OK to carry in Michigan?

Please respond to the thread listed above.

That would be my thread...

I was going to post in the Bali forum, but I was asking a question about laws, so I posted in the law forum.

(I'm a moderator on non-knife forums, and off topic posts drive me nuts) Just didnt want to get on anyones nerves.

If someone has some info it'd be great, I'm thinking about calling my local police department and asking them...tomarrow perhaps.

i don't have the slightest clue on michigan laws (or any other us laws for that sake), but i know that a balisong can be a dangarous weapon. but so can a pen be too, so...

i know that in norway, the 'weapon' has to be specially forbidden by law (that means if the law claimed that switchblades and similar were forbidden, i could have a bali, because a bali is not a switchblade. but unfortunately it's defined as a 'batanga knife, a fighting knife'. :(), if it isn't, i think there's nothing against you own it. but you don't live in norway, so i guess that doesn't help you much. ;)

Well anything can be a dangerous weapon. Thats why I dont like laws. If a police officer wanted to make a big deal out of something I bet he COULD ticket me for "assault with a pencil" or something.

Sad...

hey yeah, that true! they should have rules for making laws, so that the laws wasn't so 'incomplete'. but if you're a cop, that's a nice way of making money. 'hey! what do you think you're doing with that car key?!' 'unlocking my car?' 'yeah right, punk! that'll be a $500 fine for threatning innocent people in open streets, pluss another $200 for being a smart-ass at a police officer!' :p

but to push it to the limit... some people that are well trained, have 'deadly hands'. what then? 'hey! what do you think you're doing with those hands?!' ;) :p

so just to be certain there's a reason if i get caught, i play with balis. :D

but on the other hand, you could turn this into your advantage:

'what do you think you're doing with that bali, the mp5, those two hand granades and that molotov cocktail?! those are extremely dangarous weapons!' 'no they aren't! they're just hanging there, from my belt, not doing any harm at all!' 'really?... oh... sorry. carry on.' :D (but the cop has to be a bit dumb to buy this though, i think ;))
