Our men's ministry is looking into doing a one week mission in Guatemala in late 2010 or early 2011. I was curious if anyone could point me in t good direction to get accurate info on what's on the must have list, advice, what to read up on, etc.

Sorry to ask such a vague question but I just found out tonight. It's not like a survival situation or anything. More along the lines of help build things and such.

Thanks in advance!

Mods, if I did bad with this post, please lock it. Thanks!

hope this helps

i was there a couple years ago. my best advice would be to bring some cool clothes, a light rain coat, a baseball cap, a good knife and some pepto tablets. stay away from the water (thats what the pepto is for). its probably one of my favorite countries ive been to. the people are pretty friendly. it would really help to know spanish too. if you dont know it, a spanish-english dictionary would really come in handy. if you are going out into any market or crowded place, keep an eye on your wallet and any other belongings. one of my friends that was there with me had her purse sliced open with a razor blade while we were walking through a market. most importantly enjoy yourself and try to take in the culture. it really is a cool place.

Water purification drops/tablets would be a good idea. My hair is always shaved, so if you are like me, i'd suggest a full brimmed hat (i use a Stetson or Tilley) for full sun protection. of course a good knife, but a multitool is handy as well. I suggest you ask the question on some other sites also like RYP's black flag cafe.

Best Glide makes a kit especially for missionaries, you might want to check that out and check out their site as well. It is under the

Mission Aviation Fellowship Aviation Survival Kit

www.adventuresurvivalequipment.com

www.bestglide.com

You can get some great ideas from their kit list for you and your group.

Also if you have any additional questions, just e-mail them and put it to the attention of Cindy in Customer Service, just tell her Marko from the IntoTheWoodsBook Project sent you, she will happy to help you, she is a very nice lady.

God Bless Brother, I pray that the Lord leads you and the group where He wants you to go so that you will be in His Will and safe.
