Can you see why I can't use the search funcion? I tried emailing, but have not rec'd a response. Thanks

The web overall might be free, but there are quite a few cost that go in to having a site like this function. There is the cost to host the site, the cost of having the address of the site registered, the cost of the servers, and so on. So Spark does the best he can to keep the servers and such functioning as well as they are able to with the capacity that this site faces, but some tradeoffs are having to be made right now.

We either have fewer functions and a site that all are still able to use for free, or you have a site that only those who pay can use for a fee.

No Offense to you JohnnyO, but maybe there is a more obvious way we can post this whole search deal so people will stop asked what’s going on. I though the post at the top of every forum would do, But I guess not :(

The Internet is tax-free, as far as US tax laws go. That was done to enable the Web to "get on it's feet" during it's early stages. Even that may come to an end in the not too distant future. The Web may have to slug it out like everything else in a free market economy.

These sites cost $$$ to run and maintain. We all have to face reality here. The days of the free lunch may be limited and at some point in time we all may have to make some tough choices. This is all just pure economics.

well....what do you see in the future?

down the road do you see this site drawing to an end?

are we talking about a Pay-only site perhaps?

what things would be needed to keep the site going,,,and to keep adding information for us new guys to search for?

Just click on the "Get a Premium, Gold, Dealer or Knifemaker Subscription, and help support the forums." link at the top of the page. $20-$30 per year doesn't seem like too much if you come here everyday.

What is required to make sure this site is here for us in the future is for members to show support for BladeForums by upping their memberships.

This has been gone over many times in the past, but it costs a great deal of money to keep a site like this up and running. It should not be left to Spark to have to finance it. Personally I would love to see Spark actually start to make money from BladeForums, but that may never happen. Breaking even would even be nice. As it is, he is still supporting it very heavily with money made from 1SKS.

We all need to decide how important it is to us to keep this community strong. If you want to have the latest forum software with the best servers then step to the plate and help Spark keep BladeForums in the preeminent position it now holds. It costs pennies a day to get a Premium or Gold membership. There is no better bargain anywhere as far as I am concerned.

When you consider that the machine that one of these site runs on are dual CPU P3/P4/Xeon with Gigabytes of ram and a humongous SCSI disk array to speed things up, no, nothing is free.
The search function are most likely used with a forum wide search, which really aggrevate the other functions that the server have to do, like serving the more mundane and less CPU intensive pages. If you see those server is busy, please come back a moment messages, you understand what I mean.

Thebadguy, the post at the top says server problems. Honestly, I didn't think to look there for an answer to my question. If the search function loss primary result of this site's server problem, maybe change the post to reflect that. Then, people would be drawn to the post for their answer.

As others have noted, this really is an easy solution. Buy a premimum membership package. The costs are stupidly reasonable. The value is amazing. I paid $30 for a gold membership. The things I have learned and the friends I have made from finding this site are worth many many times more then the $30 I paid to play here. I would not own most of the custom knives I own or would have ever considered going to Blade in Atlanta had I not found this site and the chat room. I'll renew my membership when it comes up, and continue to do so as long as the site exists. All the whining about not getting all these outstanding services for free is really getting old. Pretty sad when people expect everyone else to pay for them to enjoy all the premium features and services. If you want them, pay. If you don't want to pay, shut the hell up.

aaahhhhh crap. Keith shamed me into it. One new gold membership submitted.
