Question for Mr. Mayo, Russ, and Scottdog, or anyone who's done this...

I gutted a bunch of Salmon with my new TNT today, it worked great, and kept an awesome edge... It IS however, coated with guts and slime on the inside (where guts belong). I cleaned the blade and external surfaces pretty well.....

But, I was wondering.... what would happen if I put this baby through the dishwasher? Tom, would this work? Russ, Scott Dog? have you guys ever done this?

I know they are extremely corrosion resistant, but what about detergent? Tom, will the washers stand up to it?

Thanks,

-Dave:)

And if so... do you guys recommend "Cascade" Detergent--(with sheating action?) I'd hate to have spots on my TNT! It would be cool if it were lemon-fresh, though.;)

Why don't you just disassemble the knife, clean it, and put it back together? Would that void the warranty? Doesn't Tom include a wrench to break down his knives, like Chris Reeve? Taking it apart seems the easiest method for cleaning it thoroughly, like I would my Sebenza's.

Tom's the man to answer, of course.

But the TNT has a Talonite blade, right? It should have no problems in the dishwasher. Some dishwashing detergents are very harsh. But, you can get 95% of the benefits of a dishwasher with no detergent at all.

Many people worry about temper. To affec the temper, you have to get above the final heat-treatment temperature. While Tom might want to chime in with that info specifically for the TNT (though some makers consider that to be a guarded trade secret), most are well above 300F. Water boils a little over 200F, so your dishwasher isn't gonna get much over that. I put a thermalcouple in mine once and it topped out a little over 220F.

I have run Benchmade balisongs through the dishwasher many times. Works great. They need a bit of oil when they come out.

Frankie, now where would be the fun in that? I figure any knife worth totin' should be able to hold up to the rigorous standards of any Maytag or Whirpool.... :)

No, I did clean it up real nice, but I was just wondering if it was POSSIBLE to run this little bad-boy through the diswasher without damage.

I think this knife is beautiful, but it is going to be my user as well. I wanted a knife that I could take pride in, use the hell out of, and still give to my son someday.

So far, I've trimmed rose bushes, cut slices of Asian BBQ pork, gutted and de-scaled five salmon, used it to spread peanut butter and fresh raspberry jam on some bread, crushed garlic, cut fishing line, sliced a bunch of rope, hemp and nylon (just for the fun o' it), etc.. etc..

It's a kick ass knife in all ways...

I figured I would see if I could just pop it up top of my dishwasher and let it revitalize and cleanse this fine cutting machine....

Thanks Gollnick,

sorry, It took me so long post my last post that I did not have a chance to see what you wrote. I was pretty confident that the heat would not hurt it, but I am mainly concerned with the washers on the blade pivot. If they are synthetic, detergent may affect them..

By the way, I still don't have any connection to the Clam Chowder Guy.... :)

the only problem I would see might be the hot water making all the lube run out. It has teflon washers so thats not a big probem, BUT...

when the detent ball runs dry on a Stellite blade it squeeks, big time. It doesnt do it on any hardenable steel, just stellite, so you need to put a dab of lite grease in the the lock hole if you can, maybe a toothpick would work. Why dont you just try running it under the hot water for a minute or so?

Talonite is food safe. It is used in the commercial food industry. Typically the kettles are boiled in concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. Then they are water rinsed followed by an acid rinse to neutralize the caustic soda. Finally there is a chlorine rinse to sanitize.

HA!!!!!!

I was just talking to Mayo last night on the phone, mentioned I had just used my TImascus TNT to cut up a bunch of Chicken for dinner, and had a bunch of chicken fat all in and around the lockbar. He said just run it under really hot water for a minute. I did, and it took care of it. I always use my TNT's in the kitchen, and ALWAYS just rinse them off with soap and water. Last night was especially messy :D {chicken-wise that is}. Oh, I rarely {read:never} lube most of my kitchen TNT's. No probs yet.

Hey...

Thanks Tom and Russ,

Tom, Have you ever made a chef knife? Russ, I used mine for cooking too, but only next to the river... My TNT is not ready for efficient veggie chopping.

That would be very cool, to have a Mayo 8" to 10" chef knife with nice wood (or Ti) handles.:)

-Dave

By the way, hot water did just fine, and no squeaking!

i dont put knives in the dishwasher

if i get my tnt really gross i will simply rinse with water and relube ... i have used tuffglide almost exclusively and it works well

when it starts to squeek ... few drops ... work it in and it is as good as new.....
