. . . either present or past. Y'all would have a unique frame of reference to answer: What is your favorite knife under $100, both folder and fixed blade, and a brief statement of why, as it compares to your experience with your customs.

Not really sure I understand your question  but My favorite Folder for Less than $100 would be my Spyderco Endura4 PE waved - $75
My Favorite fixedblade for less than $100 would be my KA-BAR/BECKER BK9 - $65. As far as how they compare to a Custome...they don't

I'm not quite sure of the way you worded your question either. I own a couple customs though. One folder and one fixed blade. There's no way I could pick just one folder and one fixed blade right now so heres some recommendations:
Folder:
BM Griptilian
Kershaw Avalanche
Lone Wolf Blackfoot
Fixed:
Come to think of it I don't have a real favorite here right now. There are sooooo many to choose from in this price range, you could even get a small custom for near $100.

I think the highest quality knife, which is also my favorite, under $100 that I've seen, is actually a knife slightly above $100. benchmade 960 (it has to be red), which I unfortunately sold. compared to customs, a lot of the knives I've seen have issues with handle sharpness. they don't round off the edges as well, so it's sometimes uncomfortable to hold. the benchmade 960 was instantly smooth, locked up tightly, and had no real flaws that I could see. it seemed miles ahead in terms of fit and finish than anything else I've seen in that price range. I can't believe they discontinued it. it was super light too since it was aluminum, and who doesn't like annodized red handles.

As I'm understanding the OP's question, what folder & FB would be my favorite, past or currently owned, that's under $100 & how did they compare to my customs, if I've had any for a frame of reference.

With that understanding, I'd say a waved Endura for the folder & a Becker for the FB. Just about any of the Beckers (I've had a 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, & 11), although I prefer the Camillus made ones. Those might be getting harder to get, though.

As to how they compared to my customs, they don't. F&F, blade steel, comfort of the handle, smoothness (On the folders), etc, are just better on the customs in comparison to the under $100 folder/FB.

Not sure what says, though.

Thanks for the responses. My apologies for not expressing myself a little better, guys. You all understood exactly what I was asking, except for one part of the question.

Obviously, the customs are not only better, but a good deal better. Still, after asking you folks to name a best folder and a fixed production under $100, what I wanted to know by "comparison" was something along the line of how far up the scale of 1-10 the cheaper production knives came, calling the customs you owned a 10 (or close to it, depending on which custom you were thinking of).

Just was curious b/c of the different perspective the custom folks could bring to the old "best knife under $100" debate.

Two that I will keep going back to consistently that cost under $100 are my Spyderco Manix II and my Kershaw Groove. Both are pretty high quality for the cost and it's a pleasure to carry and use them.

right now i would have to say my favorite folders under $100 are a cold steel recon 1 and a cold steel american lawman. both are in the $65 range.

fit/finish is decent. the grinds on both were uneven, one side was ground to about 15 degrees, one side to about 25 degrees. visually/aesthetically they were equal, but i discovered the discrepency when i sharpened them.

both have great ergonomics (for me, at least) and great locks.

the coatings are teflon, and tend not to be very durable.

they both carry well and are pretty light.

i had to sand the scales down and tweak the clips. the texturing was so aggressive and the clips so tight i couldn't get them in and out of my pocket without extra effort. also, one of the screw holes for the clip was stripped fairly easily. they both come with two clips, but you can't attach both at the same time, though they also both come with six screws each.

i dont think i have any fixed blades that are under $100 right now. but i would say my favorite was a swamprat howling rat. when they were offered on their site they were about $90 with a pretty nice leather sheath.
