I was just wondering what the average turn around is for your stuff, like how many days after receipt does it take to get a blade shipped out. I will have one blade, possibly 2 blades of A-2 i would like at 60 RHC and cryo treatment. How much would this be? Also, what is your mailing address? thanks!

Taz: normal time in my shop is 3 to 5 working days. Single blades are $1200 each up to 5, Then it falls under the $60.00 Min. up to 20 blades, After 20 they are $3.00 each . One blade with shipping and handling would be aprox. $19.50 ground to Pen. on ground with U.P.S. with $100.00 ins. U.S. Postial service would be a little cheeper. Two blades would be about $31.50. Thank you Paul Bos Heat treating, 1900 Weld Blvd. EL Cajon, Calif. 92020

Wow, $1200 a blade! I wish I could make that kind of money! Hehe, I love funny typos

Paul B.,

Do you typically multiquench and cryo A2? If, not, what would be a typical A2 heat treat?

Thanks.

Jeff: I dont multi-quench, But multi temper. Heat Treat procedure I use on A-2 is as follows: 1750 to 1800 deg. F. hold @ temp. for aprox. 30 min. in Argon atmos. Rapid air quench, Snap temper @ 350 deg. F. for 2 hrs. Ramp down to -280 deg. F. hold for 8 to 14 hrs. depending what time of day i get them in the freezer, If i get them in right before i go home i leave them in all night. Bring back to room temp. For a R\C-60 I double temper @425- 450 deg. F. for2 hrs. @ temp. per. temper. hope this helps. Paul.

Tom if you are willing to pay $1200 per blade, I'll do yours for $1100 per blade, if you promise not to tell any one. Your friend, Paul.

Well, now I will only have one blade to be heat treated. I lost number 2 tonight. It has been giving me problems from the start, so now it is a practice knife. The one I have is a 4" hunting knife of A-2. Just to be fair, I want to warn you now that this is my first blade that is being really heat treated, so it will probably be prone to warping. The grind is convex and I have no idea if the grinds are even. they look pretty even, but i dont know. I am in CT, how much more will it cost to ship it there? I am in PA for college, but CT during the summers. Do you heat treat 1095? 1095 is about 1/3 the cost of A-2. I am going to switch to a cheaper steel while I practice. My next project is a big kitchen knife, probalby out of 440-C or ATS-34, which I know you can work your magic on! Well, thanks for the info and hopefully I will ship the blade out next week! Are there any spec stuff you need, like a certain finish, certain size holes or anything? The blade has a 120 grit belt finish on it and a little handle rubbing. Holes are 1/8 and 11/32.

Taz: Just send the blade the way it is, 220 finish is best. Seeing this is your first blade to send out for Heat treat, and you are willing to pay $1200 per blade, this one is on me.just send $7.00 ,and a note with your name, address, PH#. for return postage. Paul.

Wow! Thanks, Mr. Bos! I'll email you! I will send the second one, but I think you will get a good laugh out of it! Should I send it in the condition it is in, with grooves and everything? I have to thin the edge out a little, I think. It goes from an actual edge to pretty thick, so I will have to grind it down. the grinds are all SNAFU'd, so i will have to smooth some of it out. On second thought, it isn't that bad, but i think you will get a chuckle out of it! I'll get them ready for you and send them out monday! I really appreciate the offer!

paul you just did a batch of ats-34 they came back great! your my man now, which brings me to acouple of questions. the previous heat treaters work left the blades a silver yellow not like the purple? and one of them is warped, even though it is not your work would you straighten it for a fee? thanks Laurence segal
