Question for Paul Knife owners

I just received a Lone Wolf Paul folder yesterday and while I really really like the knife, my sample exhibits some small amount of vertical play. The lock functions without flaw and there is no side to side wobble, however, there is just that bit of up/down play that annoys me. Is this normal or did I just get a bad one?

Wow, that's disappointing. I've always wanted a Paul Knife and missed out when Gerber made them, but I would have thought that the tolerances would have been much better. I guess short of sending back, there's no way of adjusting it?

I have an original Gerber from the mid to late 70's Mine has a blade stop pin behind the opened blade that is a hex head pin. The pin can be turned a little, and slop dissappears. Turn it too much and the lock won't engage.

None that I could find. The play that my knife had was not so severe that it bothered me that much. I learned to live with it. My Paul knife became one of my most favoured knives.

zinn, that is interesting. It is obviously something I never found. Thanks for the info. I am looking to replace my knife and if it exhibits the same blade play I will give your fix a try.

The stop pin on my Lone Wolf version has a torx head, but it's really small. T3 size, I think. I may have to search for a torx screwdriver small enough to see if tightening it a bit solves the problem. Unfortunately, the smallest size torx screwdriver I have is a size 6. :(

The blade stop pin in the hex head configuration is not one that is threaded on my Gerber/Paul....it is press fitted into the holes. Not really tight, but tight enough to stay in place. When rotated, it must be eccentric, because it changes the engagement for the tang to stop pin tolerence.

It may be possible to index mark it, drive it out, and reinsert it 1/8 turn different from the original position. Obviously using the proper sized torq socket would be the best fix.

I've seen pics of Gerber's version of the Paul Knife, and the originals seem to have a hex head on the stop pins, but the latter versions did not. I'll have to seek out a t-3 torx driver and see if it works on mine. Anyone know a source? I don't think I've seen that size of torx driver at my local Radio Shack.

I don't have a Lone Wolf Paul knife, but a friend has. It's lock-up is totally tight. I've handled about 4 at shows. Each time the lock execution was perfect and tight. I checked, because the Gerber version is known for lock-up problems. Contact Lone Wolf, they responded within a day to an e-mail I sent asking about blade steels.

I did as zinn1348 suggested and rotated the stop pin. On the Lone Wolf version, it is definately an eccentric stop pin so rotating it forward tightens it and rotating it back loosens it. Now my Paul knife locks up tight without any up/down blade wobble.

Glad it worked for you.

Nothing I hate worse than the idea of sending a brand new knife back to correct something that should have been addressed by the workers at the factory/shop.

That Paul design is really slick with that eccentric pin trick. I don't recall ever having seen that on any other knives of that time frame...really innovative.

Spread the word when the issue resurfaces.

What size torx did it take?
