I am planning on buying a Rolex Explorer 2 very soon. I just have to ask what you would pay for this watch? The local high end jewelry store I am planning on buying from is selling it for $6843 Canadian. Is this watch worth it? This is something I am going to have to put on layaway because I can't afford that much on the spot and it will be the last watch I ever buy and wear.

Do YOU think it's worth that much? You are paying $5,000+ for a watch so you have to ask yourself why YOU want it, because you are sure to get a lot of mixed opinions. I would never buy that watch. Only Rolex I would buy is the Submariner, or maybe the Air King. As far as the price, why not buy from an online vendor? My google-fu shows them available for around 5000USD.

I agree, the Sub is the Rolex to buy and I highly suggest a pre-owned one from a reputable dealer that offers a warranty.

-find the cheapest authorized dealer and buy knowing it will be worth more 10 years from now than you paid for it. I paid $400 for my Submariner, new, in 1982. A cleaning costs more than that now!

Is this 16570 or the new 216570? I'm not familiar with the Canadian watch market but USD$7,000 for the older reference NIB is way too much! The new EXP-II is USD$8,750; just started seeing them on the grey market and they have not shown on many of the authorized dealers yet. I understand you wish to place a layaway from an AD but if you shop around, there are plenty of good deals around. On the grey market, you can find a NIB with stickers, card, tags, manual, box and active warranty for much less than what an AD wants. You should conduct online research on some watch forums before you commit. Bear in mind resale value is lower on the EXP-II compared to other sports model. Also a price increase of 8% is coming in October, which applies to new/used from ADs and grey dealers. I have owned few sports models (including white dial EXP-II); needless to say, only a SD and a 50th Sub LV remains in my collection.

Shop smart with your hard earned money .. have fun and good luck!

Thanks, you guys have really got me thinking now. The reason I want this watch is because its something that I can hand down to my kid or maybe one day my grandkids. I haven't really researched this watch much but I will be sure too now. I will also look at the Submariner. I am worried about buying online, just afraid I will get a fake if I don't buy new from a authorized dealer.

I called Gemoro the store where I planned on buying this watch from and asked a few questions. This Explorer II is the older model. The new EXP II is $8200 Canadian. They said they would give me the older one with no tax for a straight $6843. I told them I would think about it but I wanted to look at the Submariner first, they have those in stock to but they are a little more money, I will look online.....On the up side my wife said as long as I don't exceed the cost of her engagement ring which I paid $9800 for I can have my watch.

The Explorer II is a good watch and I like the older style better than the new style. I'm not sure what prices are these days but the price seems pretty good.
