Hi, Ron. I just received my new Pentagon Elite today and I must say that this is one awesome blade. I would like to commend SOG for such fine work. But, I have a question. I notice on the SOG website that the description for the Pentagon Elite says that it is spring assisted. My knife (supposedly a PE14) is not. Can you elaborate on this? Did I get the "Old model knife in a new box" trick from the distributor that I bought it from? Thanks, Shane

Hi Shane,

I can answer this. First, I thought we'd changed the text on our website, but apparently not. The wording was chosen with a specific intent in mind, but we found out that after we posted our new site that our wording was misleading.

Let me try to explain. When using a lockback, there is actually spring tension on the blade, restricting the free-flowing opening process. On the ArcLock, the lock cam rests on the blade tang by a spring. The tang is not perfectly circular; it tapers to favor the opening of the blade. So rather than the lock cam going “uphill” on the tang while opening, it actually goes “downhill” during its opening. So, there is a slight assist during its opening.

Where the misconception has come is that there are “assisted opening” knives on the market that open via a spring (like a switchblade). The person writing the text for our website was not a highly literate knife knut and didn’t know that “assisted opening” had a specific meaning. I thought we had changed the text on our site, but apparently we have not. I’ll make sure that it is reworded soon.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks for the explanation, Ron. Like another poster said, I guess it doesn't matter that it is not spring assisted because it opens so easily as it is. Most knives need a slight flick of your wrist in conjunction with using the thumb hole/stud to open them quickly. This baby pops open by just slightly moving the thumb stud. The action (although not assisted) is incredible. Thanks again, Shane.
