Question for Sal... or anybody who knows

well the best answer I came up with was off the Hitachi website. It looks like ATS stands for Alloy Tool Steel.

Man, 130+ views and not even a guess?? This is really bothering me, and there don't seem to be any straight answers for my limited detective skills. I've learned that both ATS-34/55 are manufactured by a Japanese company calling itself Hitachi. ATS-55 is a non-high speed version of ATS-34. Anyways, somebody at least give me a "I have no idea", as it will Aleve my feelings of singular ignorance.
