Question for SAL: rolling lock

Hi Sal, There have been alot of problems with the REKAT rolling lock with very bad vertical play when in the locked position. It seems the idea behind the rolling lock is a sound one but the execution of it is not up to scratch yet. The blade won't close by accident, but the vertical play is disconcerting. Also, all the models I've seen have very quickly worn/moved to the point where the unlock button is all the way to the front of the slot. How have you overcome these problems with your designs, I'm interested in what adjustments needed to be made for these locks to reach their potential. Rekat have been very unhelpful with the 2 models I own. I wont use a blade that flops around and rattles when "locked". Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Peter,
You might want to do a search on this forum for past information on the Rolling Lock and Spyderco. Not too long ago Sal reported here that Spyderco would not be using the Rolling Lock. Instead they have some in house designs to try out. It sounded like the deal with REKAT fell through. I'm sure Sal will come on here shortly and give you a more official answer.

Them:"What's that clipped to your pocket, a beeper?"
Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

At this point, Paul is correct. We are open, but as of last week (just got back from Seki City tonight) there was no forward motion.

Peter,

I have only one knife with a REKAT rolling lock and that is a custom Talonite Carnivore built by Rob Simonich. He fitted and polished all the works and the puppy is smooth as glass with a very solid and secure lockup. Absolutely no blade play, or other nasty attributes. I have no experience with the production locks.

I too look forward to Spyderco entering the fray with improved lockwork to replace the liner lock which they do indeed do very well (something not all companies are able to accomplish with this design). It'll be interesting to see what Sal and his creative gang ultimately come up with. Undoubtedly it'll be something tough and unique

I have a production Carnivour, have cycled it at least 800+ times, and have none of the problems you describe, Peter.

I think bald1 has hit the nail on the head and I'm eagerly awaiting whatever Spyderco has in the wings. It's ALWAYS good!
