Question for Sal...Yo yo

Sal, I read on the other forums (Kf's) that you are adept at using a yo yo as a makeshift weapon.
So of course I am wondering if there might be any thoughts on introducing a Spyderco Yo Yo (SpyderYo)/Endura combo. Also maybe consider a video tape of you using the Yo Yo in a defensive role.

Huh? You mean a blade in the yo yo? Or the 2 would come together? I know how to use a yo-yo as a weapon, and you can't beat the comic effect. The truth is that anyone can learn to get one good hit with it (called "the forward pass", as well as a trick called "the sidewinder"). The trick is in making it return after impact, which is different than when you don't actually hit anything with it. Unfortunately, I was forced to stop carrying mine when it became a trend. EVERYONE had a yo yo! It was maddening. All of the posers kept asking me how to do this, and how to do that. I think it'll be safe to bring it again soon.

Hmm, I guess I should clarify what I would like to see.
I was thinking of something more in line of a Spyderco yoyo, no blade in it (ouch!). It would be made of zytel and of good weight with a tough cord, and patterned like the endura grip with the spyder in the middle. Offered with an Endura, or possibly a Matriarch (if possible) both in the same color handle material.
The basic idea is that if for whatever reason, you can't have your knife you can have your yoyo, since it is regarded as a toy. If you need to use it in a defensive situation you can. If not it is a neat little toy to have around. I agree that there is a certain comedic aspect involving a defensive yoyo (can you imagine giving a police report saying "I beaned BG X upside the head with my yoyo and KOed him. I then used the cord to tie him up for you to get here, Officer sir". The look on the cop's face would be priceless) but if one were forced to, it could be pressed into use as a defensive weapon. I think we are all pretty much familiar with the yoyo's roots, regardless of what has been made of it.
Although this is not something I really expect to see offered by Spyderco, I thought it could not hurt to ask Sal for his thoughts on the matter.

Phillip - Probably no YoYo in Spyderco's future. I played with YoYo's as a kid in Bklyn. Yes, they can be sued as a weapon, but there are other "tools" offering the same variety. We were just playing with them at the meeting. I do have a "Bill Bagwell" custom YoYo, but it is more of a showcase item than a weapon.

Sal, if you ever get the chance, I would LOVE to see a picture of it.

Yo! Sal I didn't know you're from Brooklyn, where and when? What High School? I knew there was something I liked about you, besides the fact that you're a Genius and and all around Great Person!

If you're from Brooklyn, you not only played with a Yo-Yo, I bet you hung out with a bunch of Yo-Yo's, and said "Yo!" a lot. I know I did.

The Bil Bagwell piece is just a wooden YoYo. Nothing really special other than the fact that Bill made it.

Yo PhilL - found me out. I was raised in "Brownsville", Stone & Dumont area. Interesting chilldhood. Thanx for the kind compliments.

Surprise, surprise. Small world Sal. Surely you must have played some handball back in the old Boys Club, eh? (Brighton Beach Baths, Sea Breeze park, etc.)

I would like to add to the topic that a yo yo is indeed a weapon and I think this can turn into a really interesting string - like yo yo fighting technique...

but then again - it will then be transfered to the tactical (or maybe community) section..

Hey Nanko! You too, huh?

Sal, you got a couple of birthdays on me, but not many. I know your old neighborhood, tougher than Talonite. When I was growing up I carried a knife every day, and I had to know how to use it. I'm not proud of the fact that as a punk kid I was in several knife fights, Rumbles we use to call them. I've got the scars to prove it.

What was your life like? Did you carry a knife? What kind? I won't ask if there's anything you're ashamed of, we all did what we had to do to get by.

Blilious - Wore whatever socks we could get. We wuz po folk.

PhilL - Carried knives. Fruit knives (long thin blade), some autos. Some home made pieces that would beter be discussed around cocktails.

Sal, it would be an honor to meet you in person, shake your hand and talk about the old days. Next time you're in NY drinks are on me, I O U!

Or, I could just get us a bottle of "Sneaky Pete."

Sal - hope you were not offended - I hold you in the highest respect.

I am fortunate enough to have grown in an upper middle class family - but my father had to work since he was 8 years old to support himself and help support his family.

But - its good to look back and see where you are today and where you came from.

Remember the Monty python scene "you were lucky..."
