Question for the Bushcrafters/Spyderco fans (Spyderco Proficient)

There’s this mom and pop gun shop that still has a Spyderco Proficient for sale. I’ve bought so many knives from them, some have been discontinued for 10 years plus. They are phasing away from knives and just focusing on guns. I should have bought this thing last year when it was on clearance. Oddly enough, it’s not on clearance anymore??

Anyways, would y’all drop this coin on this knife? I’m not saying I’m going to go baton the crap out of it(I can get a $15 Mora for that) but I am planning using it for camping, outdoor food prep, etc. You can say it’s overkill, but I figured I’d ask for opinions.
It’s also a numbered knife, so I’m guessing a first run. Yeah this had some OLD knives in stock lol.

I don't use mine much but have had a Proficient for many years. It's a really well made knife. The handle is very comfortable. Maybe a bit smooth for some folks' taste, but otherwise as good as they get. I'll admit I don't use mine much these days since they are no longer in production, but maybe I'll have to get it back out. For the record I've actually done some light batonning with mine during fire making... not what you'd normally do with S90V but it will handle it within reason in my experience. This is one of the Spyderco fixed blades I'd love to see another run of.

$340 is too much for a fixed blade Spyderco. Plus there’s a hole in it 🙂…. Now the other shown knife is $280 less and designed by Phil Wilson who is both an outdoorsman and a legendary custom knifemaker. I’ve always wanted to try a Wilson designed knife.

For less than that I'd make a Prevex with 4 1/4" CPM 3V blade, tapered tang, Fat Carbon Gold marbled carbon fiber scales, and a carbon fiber patterned Holstex Sheath. Would do the same jobs as that knife and many others as well. And I'd have it done by March/April.

The holes are more of a Spyderco trademark than anything functional, but they don't affect how the knife cuts, speaking of my Mule in 20CV.

I handled one at the Spyderco Factory Outlet a few years ago. I'm lucky enough to live about 20 min away. I liked everything about it except the S90 steel. I have trouble sharpening that. But other than that, it's a fantastic knife. And if you like that steel, I think it's well worth it. The handle is extremely comfortable.

For that money I'd go with a TRC South Pole or get a custom maker to make you something perfect. Spyderco fixed blades are overpriced IMO

I own a Proficient, Street Beat & a CF Millie.

Of all the mentioned models, those are the ones that I'd suggest you buy but I also own a PITS that's in the display case & that would be a good buy too.

Since they're closing them out, you might be able to work a great deal.

So, why don't you just try to buy them all? 🤔

LOL!! 😉
