Greetings all,
I'm looking to pick up a hook knife to try my hand at some spoons and figured this was the place to ask.
I was just about to pull the trigger on a Mora until I ran across Pinewood Forge. Their O1 hand made hook knife looks amazing and while it costs twice as much seems like an incredible deal.
I'd like some advice from Ali the experts here that like to hand work wood on what you use. Maybe I'll find yet another knife I wasn't considering.

Thanks all,
Joshua

Mora knives are highly rated, but not their hook knife. It is known to not be very sharp (unlike their other knives). I would recommend you give the Mora hook knife a pass.

I have a Del Stubbs (Pinewood Forge) spoon knife and it is excellent. Kestrel hook knives are also worth a look. The extra price is worth it in this case.

I should be getting my Pinewood Forge hook knife soon. It'll be my first hook, but from what I've seen it's well worth it. After you spend a few hours reprofiling the Mora hook you'll wish you had just spent the extra on getting the Pinewood Forge, which is ready to go out of the box. That's certainly the case for me, I'd rather be cutting wood than grinding steel.

Well, so much for using my Amazon gift card.
I don't have much in terms of spending money but do manage to earn a gift card now and again.

On the Christmas list it goes!

There is a forum here in Blade Forums titled "Activity, Training, and Skills Development". In that forum is a sub-forum titled "The Workshop: Tools, .......................". It is a great sub-forum and all things whittling can be found there - tools, techniques, types of wood to use, etc..

This post is meant to be helpful. It is not meant to one of my famous "Use the Search Feature" replys. Good luck to you in your whittling endeavors. I myself love to whittle but just don't have the patience to see big projects through.

Oh, and you can use that card of yours. They have plenty of the stuff you're looking for.

I'd also recommend Pinewood Forge, Del makes some fantastic knives. Two others to look at for hook knives are Deepwoods Ventures and OCC (Ozark County Carving Tools - great gouges as well).

Well I'm saving up for a pinewood forge kit with the hook and Slojyd and I forget what else.
Thanks for all the answers, it totally saved me some hard earned money.

No need to get the Pinewood sloyd. You'll be just as well served with a Mora 106 or 120, at a 60% discount.

Well the 120 should be here tomorrow (had that gift card). I've got a20# box of Rockler bass wood just waiting...

Received a right hook today from Pinewood Forge.

Gonna make some shavings this weekend.
