I'm having problems when I try to upload my pictures from my camera to my computer. Doesn't matter whether I take out the memory card or use the USB capability provided by my camera's docking station, a large number of the pictures I upload get corrupted for some reason. Either distorted by gray covering a good part of the picture, or the colors being all jacked up. As a matter of fact, if I try to load the card into the computer slot, it actually corrupts the pics on the card. Not so if I leave the card in the camera, but still corrupts them when they are uploaded. Can anybody give me any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it? I can't even load up examples to show because the program won't open them to resize for uploading.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, Have you tried using another memory card to see if the problem goes away?

Russell,
It not only happens with another memory card, it happens with another camera and memory card format. It does it to both the compact flash card for my Canon and the SDCH card for my Casio.

I'd try it on another computer, or try changing the program that reads JPG files. Right click on the JPG file and do an open with...

Then try another program, like PAINT, just to troubleshoot the problem.

Dave, do you use a program to upload your pictures to? have you tried putting the card in the computer slot, open my computer icon and open the card memory direct from there, does this have the same effect If you have tried that?

I have a converter drive reader/writer that plugs into a USB port on the side of my monitor, and the SD card plugs into the reader/writer. I never plug my camera into the computer. It doesn't have anything to do with the problem, but it saves battery and removes the downloading program from the equation. I don't mind removing the memory card.

It happens even if I stick the card in the computer slot and try to open them straight from "My Computer". I have tried using several different programs to upload, including Microsoft Office Picture Manager and Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition. But if I stick the card back in the computer, the pictures look fine on the computer. I guess I'll try to get my sister to load them on her computer. If it works on her computer, the issue is without doubt with mine. If that's the case, I'll have to start having her save them to a disc or thumb drive for me until I get this figured out. In the mean time, when taking pics of knives, I just snap a whole bunch of pics from the same angle and lighting before I go on to the next one, then take a whole bunch more. I usually get one or two good uncorrupted shots of each to use.

The fact that you can corrupt a card by putting it into your reader suggests to me that the reader is the most likely culprit. You can buy a Lexar reader that takes the common cards for (I think) well under $20.
