I have two examples of the wonderful Farmers Jack (Rooster).
My dilemma is which one to carry and use in the garden. And which one to put back to Coon finger and chicken eye. Both covers are beautiful IMHO and I thought about flipping a coin.

So this will be a very unofficial poll with about as much meaning as the big prize fight tonight.
Tomorrow night I will count the votes.

Smooth Ivory Bone VS Yellow Pick Bone

Both nice looking knives ... I voted smooth just for the fact if you garden with it ... it might be easier to clean being smooth??? ... I couldn't resist the urge to use both so my vote shouldn't count.

Here's an ORIGINAL answer...BOTH;) Seriously if I had to pick one (hard thing to do) I'd go with jigged bone. It's what I did so not sure that's a wise move:D

Those make for a tough choice! I voted pick bone because of the texture but the color on that ivory makes it a difficult decision... How about a rotation??

One is gonna be used (not abused) the other is going into the collection... Gotta fish or cut bait :D ( I Luv that one)

Here's the dilemma: Were those my knives, I'd say to myself. "Self, which one of the two do I like better?" Personally, I prefer the smooth bone. Nothing wrong with the jigged, I just love smooth bone.

So my inclination is to preserve the one I like the best, and make the other one a user. That way I'm less worried about damaging it. But then I think: does it make sense to use the less favored knife? I mean, the one I use is the one I'll be handling the most, will be adding character and memories to.

So...the answer is: use the jigged bone one and send the smooth one to me. :p

Just joking, of course, just trying to think of a logical answer. The other way is to flip a coin. As soon as you come up heads or tails, what's your immediate reaction? Do you feel glad or disappointed by the result? If so, then you already know the answer.

Smooth ivory bone will show wear and scratches more, and can stain a bit. I'd use the jigged bone.

Got the exact same pair myself, plus a couple of the Orchards....so I know your position. I like both knives immensely, I decided to carry&use the Jigged Bone and stow the Ivory Bone. How why? Just had both in the hand, spent long time opening and closing and the Jigged Bone was the more tactile, more pleasing in the hand. Plus, jigged gets a fantastic pocket-worn aspect to it.

P.S. These are wonderful knives, my favourite SFO of all time and my favourite User/Safe pair. Means you can't go wrong

Regards, Will

You stole my opening! But, my conclusion is the opposite:

Determine which one you like best, and use the snot out of it.* Then, you'll love it.

At least, that's how it works for me. o_O

I almost always pick Jigged bone over any other material. The smooth bone is beautiful for sure, but I think jigging adds texture - both in visual and tactile terms.

The smooth bone looks like a "richer" piece, while the jigged bone looks like something I want in my hands on a regular basis.
