this is a question for the realist most amazing knife maker in the biz!! Mr. Mike Snody

my question is what are your thought on the advantages and disadvatages of a full custom handmade, hand ground, hand sanded knife, full hand on knife maker (Snody) over the a semi custom knife makers that does most but not all the work (strider, hinderer, Brouse)/ over big mass production company that literly does almost no hands on and its mostly produced my machines or do over seas (spyderco, benchmade, kershaw)?? it was kinda hard to word that but i hope you understand my question. by the way im trying not to call anyone out i just gave some examples. i love every knife companey that i gave an example :D

thanks keep it real

matt

I also second this question but no matter what I think it's worth noting many of us made it here through avenues that those other knife companies setup. For instance I would have never found out about the beauty of the next level had I not made it thru watching the Asian production game grow and grow over the past 10 years. To me they are all sell outs but what do I know. I'm a huge cold steel fan but I also think they are a bunch of douche bags, but I respect the fact that I can buy a Tanto Lite for 20 bucks (13 wholesale) and have a seriously flawless disposable blade with no imperfections is it an heirloom piece? No! It's about half the thickness of a tanto master at 1/10 the price....as much as I love customs it's hard to achieve that level of perfection no disrespect but the more I learn the more i see that the beauty of customs comes from each blade being slightly different. But is that thin ass Krupp crap going to last 5000 years on that thin ass shit hell no but at that price point you gotta be appreciative right? By the time you pay those companies the 217 dollars it's gonna take you to get a respectable production blade, you might as well have sat down with mike and tell him you appreciate that he never sold out like every single other god damn person and moved his name and fame to a labor campus in china and take that same 217 dollars and get your hands on an heirloom piece that your grand kids are gonna look back after your kids pass it on and say my grandfather was the truth. Real recognize real, you show that custom blade maker respect, and he in turn will respect you for taking the time out of your busy life to let them know how much you appreciate and recognize how unprecedented what they are doing is in an industry and workd dominated by greed. I don't like to tell people how to run their business but I think the time has come for Snody to slap a ballin' USA insignia in his blades because their really aren't any more US factories that are worth talking about in any industry not just knives, and the fact that we have a dude as real as Snody on our team, breaking his back for us so we can have a handmade custom blade at a fair price, employing people, putting money back into the American economy....if he reaches just one person if not many that is the difference right there- u found it. Or u can go watch Lynn Thompson swear up and down he invented the tanto and that he's a real American while although I respect their knives, they don't give a damn whether they come from china Taiwan Japan Malaysia Botswana outer space etc....all he cares about is money and looking at himself in the mirror and calling himself a real knife maker. And even tho there is a dollar sign in $nody and he gots a family to feed and wants some retirement money...dude is breaking bread with us....he is on a level now where he could say fuck the game and only put out 400 dollar blades and guess what they'd all sell. But dude is keeping it real. He could say fuck the people it's my time to get paid but his allegiance to us is what makes him so special and rare and that transfer into his body of work and is the same reason his knives are going to double in value in 10 years.

To me a snody piece is the truth how many other knife makers are going to invite you into their shop via video, break down the process with you, not hide their techniques, spread the knowledge and promote u to learn as much as you seek....there is a reason when u reach out to these other companies they not only don't want to teach u anything they want to hide as much as possible because they know deep down they are cutting corners.

Do u think those other dudes have the balls to show u their assembly? No they don't so they substitute that with cardboard box stabbing and cheap videography gimmicks. What a waste.

And guess what else. When you call up one of those companies and say. Hey I'm a young knife enthusiast with some great ideas I'd love to share with your design team, for free, as an internship, just to get that on my resume that I've worked with greats, their ego gets in the way, they would hate for some young dude to come and god forbid contribute an idea that may surpass their own self fulfilling legacy of greed. That's why it's never about the people it's about them and how much money they aren't taking home having the pay the overhead of employing the people that are doing the real work!

I get the vibe that snody not only makes knives but he promotes the growth and education of the knife community while these other assholes hide as much information as they can so you can't count their carrots.

As far as the knives go I can't comment fully because I'm learning everyday and striving to gain knowledge, but I know I've learned more from Snody in one week than I have my entire life reaching out to some of the companies and their management and designers.

U have to respect a dude that keeps it real, especially when his knives are cutting edge technology, no pun intended. Just look at the aggressive angles on mikes knives verses even the most expensive knives of the brands you named. I have owned and do own most of the blades we are talking about here and the truth of the matter is they some of those expensive striders built a name and ran with it. And are overcharging the crap out of people.

To me snody has kept it real because he has the fame to do the same but be is here fighting for the grass roots cuz that's where he came from. And don't get me wrong, dude has put in work and deserves to get paid. But when u are running things with the one man army management he does, u cut out the overhead of having to pay everyone under you and charging a thousand dollars for a 500 dollar knife so you can get paid and you can pay all them.

Don't get it twisted if mike wanted to do that he could do it in a heartbeat, factories would be lining up to get a piece of tha production action. But dude is keeping it real and he is keeping it real for u and for me.

So when you compare there is no comparison. They don't call him the realest knife maker in the game for nothing, he got nothing to hide like these other fools and their soiled underwear.

I still respect everyone in the blade community for their dedication. But damn if more people were like mike the world would be a much better ok place.

When some of those striders or custom dauntless knives release on tripleaughtdesign....look at all the people that have to take a cut of that money u r paying the bills the salaries, the tad gear cut and the presidential profits

With mike u are paying the man.

Do the math. While I respect some of those knives I don't respect how they are marketed, and snodys quality is just as good and better in many ways and a fraction of the price because his hustle allows him to reach u directly rather than go thru 5 middle man just to get your hands on a limited run knife

I agree with everything you said to the T! I'm a long time knife enthusiasts and love all knives. I really didn't haave the respect for the custom handmade knife makers out there untill now. Iv just stated to get my feet wet in the custom knife making by making my own. I have 5 knives ready for heat treat!! Its all becuase of $nody that iv even started making my own. I now know first hand on how much work and time goes into a custom handmade knife. Dont get me wrong I will always buy the production knives but I will not have any respect for them like I do when I comes to a custom handmade knife maker ($nody, Fletcher, John fitzen, carter, etc. Thanks for you input (story)

Like snody himself says

Much respect

Nice video, we really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos around your busy work schedule. I have to say hands down there is no one else coming close to what you are producing blade wise in terms of quality craftsmanship aggressiveness and tradition...and then when you look at the other side of the spectrum - there is absolutely no one out there, especially on the highest rung of the ladder, acknowledging their customers and fans with this level of supreme knowledge, caring, loyalty, and most importantly heart.

And when you do the math, those traits make you an outstanding knife maker, but even deeper than that, it shows you are an exceptional human being with great character in an industry where that just doesn't exist. And i would like to thank you personally for having the courage to let us be part of your awesome body of work and your growth as a man.

It's just awesome to see someone improve so much from year to year and when others may feel comfortable resting on their accomplishments ....it's great to see you constantly setting the bar higher for elevation, and to include us is very special and it means a lot to me right now .... It's been a very tough year for most of us. And they say the best things in life are free, priceless, and intangible and I'm so proud to be associated with everything the Snody movement represents

What an awesome community of decent human beings, hard working hustlers on the grind. It's a community inside of a community and we are a rare elite breed.

I would love to meet a nice female from this kinda community because you already know she'd have an abundance of quality characteristics like being honest extremely hardworking intelligent loyal realistic tough, fearless
And not to mention passionate about what they believe in.

Everything snody represents to me is everything rare and desirable :D

Thanks again mike for giving us all a place to call home and shine. I'm really looking forward to watching the community and the people grow exponentially as a whole community network and as individuals who care as much about each other as they do themselves.

I have a lot of love for this community, it's a true honor to be part of it.

And I would like to ask a question of the other members.
That I'll be posting very shortly (:

All love and respect to all my homies out there !!

Thanks for spreading the Snody Gospel

You have to meet some of my lil homegirls like Amy, she is single.
She is dangerous though..
She drove a car off into the ocean last week and water came in through the sun roof..
She will be at Vegas representing the cause..
Get at me..

Hello,

Your buddy who helped you with one of the videos above, was using some sort of device where the blade was clamped to something that looked like an angle iron

Was wondering why?

What are the benefits?

Is it easier, faster, more precise ... why is it not done freehand?

I have seen you and your guys do freehand grinding as well so my next question is more one out of curiosity

What do you think about makers who can´t make anything without using an angle iron or other fictures like that ?

thx

best regards,
AL

You aint missing nothing!!!
Excellent question Bro..
I will make a video for you..
Respect.

Interesting to see my name on there, lol. Mike explained it very well in the video with the motorcycle reference, but Snody, Strider, Hinder, and myself all have a similar approach. We all have a "production" line with products mainly made by machine and we all also do full handground customs with handrubbed satin finishes which sell for a lot more. Although a big majority of Mikes stuff is done my hand, he has products made by CNC's as well. Another interesting topic is, whats the definition of something being made by hand? Technically mike is still using a machine (belt grinder) to make his knives, similar to what I do on a manual mill, the machine is doing the work but your moving the steel.

Snody where u get your tanks from. In my business we use nitrogen to power our dental drills, compressed air too but nitrogen is more portable and less noisy. Before 9/11 we use to get them delivered right to our door but since then AirGas has some sort or new homeland security rules where they won't deliver their tanks to us in residential. So I'm guess u gotta pick yours up as well in Texas ? We end up using a transfer hose off their premises and transfer to several smaller tanks and we end up losing a bit of gas in the deal luckily it's not real expensive and it lasts us for at least a quarter of the year to test our high speed handpieces turbines which Im fairly certain your dentist uses cuz I'm the realist dental driller in the game

Dude, can you make me a deal on some new gold teeth..
I want 18ct crowns on bottom.. Get at me man.
I have already got my grill for the top but I want permanent on the bottom.
Respect..

$nody I deal with universities and general dentists mostly as well as orthodontists periodontists and endodontists. I can honestly say that the gold grill game is outside of the realm of mainstream dentistry especially on the corporate level.

However all of my clients down gold crowns, and they use my high speed, low speed, and lab hand pieces to do so.

Lol i would be scared to go to a dentist that had a commercial out that said motherfucker and nigga hahaha but taking a look at his setup, he's got all clean equipment and the latest hub unit and it looked pretty clean to me. I have a rep in that area and I'm sure dr Kelly prolly graduated from nova cuz I sure as hell know he didn't go to UF lol so I will def make a few calls for you and we can see what's poppin...I'm somewhat of a professional equipment trader...I trade all my dental work and all my families dental work and I keep these doctors happy and I got names to drop like its my job.

I got a guy in Houston that is more than capable and he is also one of the best in the country and I know because I'm the one booking these continuing education courses and the lecturers and it's well documented who is good and who is shit. Only problem is he isn't real ghetto like that and most of his work comes from root canals and crowning just a few teeth. Find out some pricing for me and pm me and I'll put out a few calls and see what kinda strings I can pull...I think I can make something happen for ya but it's just a step outside the regular norm so it's gonna be interesting, long story short...I would then trade them equipment, and depending on how much the work is and how much equipment they need, you would prolly have to throw down a little chunk of cash to the doctor and then whatever the difference is in equipment I trade, I would charge them retail, and charge u wholesale so you could end up making it up to me by running me a special off a couple runs that are extra sharp.....I'll do what I can for ya bro. If you need regular dentistry or your kids need braces holler at me too will make something happen, I got influence in Texas man I fuck with all the Chinese greats that's where u wanna be no joke
