question for the Remington 870 owners

I'm very close to buying a Rem 870 express in 20 ga...I handled one today in the shop and was impressed by the fit and finish... the clerk told me it had interchangable chokes..however when I returned and looked it up on line it's listed as having a rem(tm) mod. choke.... to anyone that owns this firearm can you tell me is it removable or not? and if aftermarket chokes are avail? thanks

Thanks...It seemed odd that in todays day and age a pump gun would have a fixed choke.

incidentally I'm trying to decide between that and a mosberg 500..I like them both but the Mossy's overall capacity is 6 rounds..and local legislation will not allow me to register anything with a cap over 5.

I have a standard 870. It does not have screw in chokes. It is a modified choked barrel. I believe that the express allows you to change chokes but you have to buy different ones. A modified is a good all around choke. It may be the only one that comes with the gun from the factory. Full will keep the pattern tighter. Improved cylinder spreads the pattern out some. You will need a choke wrench to take them in and out as they screw into the barrel. Nice gun with lots of options.

Yeah I used to hunt with a mod choke when I was a squirt... I'm starting to get back into it this season... I wanted interchangable chokes so I'd have the option to throw some slugs if I want with out having to get the extra barrel. Thanks.

You won't go wrong with the 870. The Mossy is a good gun as well but I have a little more faith in the 870 overall.

Still kicking myself for selling my fixed-choke modified 870 in the 80's .Never even shot it,and took the coin to buy a savage side-by-side . Boy, did I rip myself off ! Fool things you do when yer young and don't know better.

Both the 870 and 500/590 are great guns. I had every intention to buy an 870 but when I went to my local gun store and held the two of them I was sold on the 590. I just like the way it feels more.
But you cant go wrong with either.
Also the 590 would definitely be out as it holds 9 rounds :p

The 590 is deffinitely my preffered choice, just can't get quite used to the ergonomics of the 870. As long as you like the ergo's of the 870 theres no reason not to get it, the removable choke tubes are just a bonus.

Maybe someone else can confirm, but im pretty sure you can fire slugs out of any modern shotgun regardles of choke.

I have an 870 express 20ga magnum. well worth it. I like the mossberg 590 for a tactical, but even there, the 870 in 20 is a really nice piece- lots of power and half the recoil.

Chokes are easily interchangeable, the remchoke is a screw in jobby. you can also order barrels.

I have a 870 20 gauge. Fantastic gun. I primarily got it for the slug barrel for deer hunting, but it came with both barrels which I think is super nice. Looking back, I kinda wish I would have gotten the 12 gauge though so I could Turkey hunt with it too.

I have owned a Moss 12 500, good gun overall, I now have a Rem 12 870 with a field smooth bore w/chokes and a fully rifled w/rifle sights slug barrel. My experience has been fine with both. Buy the one YOU like. As far as your local restrictions on nothing over 5, just cut a 1/2 wooden dowl to the proper size and plug it to hold what you need. Here in CT it is 1 chambered & 2 in the tube for hunting. When the season is over I remove the plug and I am back up again. Just a thought. Good luck.

Both great guns, but the Remmy is built JUST A LITTLE better.

My Remington 870 express has been through 10 seasons of duck hunting out of a kayak. Every year it lays in salt water, gets rained on and treated poorly. Every Fall it asks for more. I have the slug barrel and scope for it also. Very good shooter. The only thing I question is the ejector clip mounted inside the receiver. Mine has never broken, but I recognize it as a weak point and will probably pick up a spare one day.

Really, you can't go wrong with either the Mossberg or the Remington. Matter of choice.

I've hunted with an 870 Express for many years and have never been disappointed by it. I am still using Remington choke tubes but there are a number of manufacturers that make tubes for the 870.

Mossy's are crap compared to Remington.. My whole family has had both and hands down the Remington is by far the better built shotty. We sold every last one of our Mossy's.. POS

Hell i still shoot my grandads and dads Remington 1187. the youngest one is 30yrs old. shoots like a fucking champ. the only thing that has been replaced was the spring and the O ring

my thing is, why a 20ga? 12's are more versitile, stronger, further distance, etc

Do you mean the 1100? Don`t think the 1187 has been around 30 years.

Riley,

The choke should be interchangeable. Did you look at the end of the barrel while you were handleing the gun? You should be able to see if there was an insert in the barrel with little notches in the end to accomodate the choke wrench. Which model were you looking at? Was it a sportsman?

I have been shooting Remington 870's for 30 years. IMO the gun is one of the best all around shotguns there is. I have Browning's A5, and the Gold Hunter. Winchester Model 12's (classic) and Weatherbys. Shotguns in all Gauges. Double guns, pumps, and autos. If I had to have just one. It would be my 870. The guns just keep going.

If you are ever out this way on the island and want to try and get in some skeet shooting or sporting clays with an 870 send me a pm. we can see if we can hook up and try out a few different guns.

I have never owned a Mossberg however many people I know have and I think the Remington just handles a little better IMO

Hope this helps.

Paul

+1 to valcas1. Look at the end of the barrel. If there are little notches inside, then it's an interchangeable choke. It probably only comes with the modified choke.

RemChoke, means that you have to use Remington Rem Choke choke tubes or aftermarket ones that say they are compatible. You can't just buy any old choke tube.

IMO, pick up the Full choke and Improved Cylinder chokes, and you're all set. IC is better than cylinder bore, because it shoots rifled slugs just fine, and gives a better pattern for buckshot than a cylinder bore does.

What is the barrel length? If it's the 26 or 28 inch, think about getting a 20" barrel for protecting the homestead.

Nice thing about Remington over Mossberg, is Remington uses steel receivers, rather than aluminum.
