Question for the SAK Users

OK...have a SAK Super Tinker, EDC it, love it, use it, etc, etc, ... but ...

What the heck is the hook for?:confused:
 
You know, that's a good question, I've often wondered that myself. Maybe some of our more enlightened members will be able to fill us both in.
 
I may be way off but I think think i have herd that it is used, or was used to carry packages that are bound shut with twine. I tried it once with a semi heavy package and it did seem to help. Joe
 
I've heard that as well, that it's a parcel carrier, so that the twine or string of a heavy bag won't hurt or cut into your hand.
 
It's a package/parcel carrier, in Europe they stil commonly use string to tie them.

Victorinox calls it a "multi-purpose hook", and it can be handy for other things, one use I found for it was lifting hot pots that have a wire bail/handle off of campfires.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense.
 
I've seen pictures of really old knives that had similar hooks that were used to button tiny cuff buttons, shoe buttons, bodices, etc. Button hook. I bought a SuperTinker as a gift (mine is a regular Tinker) and tried out the hook as a button hook, and it worked okay.

I have quite a few SAKs and I haven't found a use for the hook yet. The good news is - if you need a hook, you have one.

My theory was that it was similar to the hooks above - Egyptian mummification brain hooks - used to remove the brain through the nostril during the mummification process.

I suppose if I do need to do an impromptu mummification...I'm ready to rock!
 
I've used it as a pot lifter/lid lifter to good effect. I've also read that many people use it as a 'coat hanger' in public restrooms.
 
wow ,,,now i know what to do with that hook,,,i also wondered about that,,,also have the super tinker ,,,coat hanger in restroom ? sounds good to me ,,,
 
It also works great to pull cotter pins and small cable and string line.
 
Also works well for opening canned drinks and pop top cans when you have a nasty cut on your index finger:p
