Question for those of you with a Military model

I think I've decided to make the Military my next EDC/all-around knife..I only want to carry 1 knife in addition to my sidearm and the Military fits the bill well. I'm currently trying to decide on edge type, but I guess that's another topic entirely. Feel free to weigh in on it, though. My main question is regarding the "MILITARY" marking on the blade. How is this writing placed on the blade...laser? Does it come off or can it be removed? Thanks!

Edited to add these two pictures...different marking appearance, thus my confusion:

i would definitely go with all serrated, i love the spyder edge, its an amazing feature that i wouldn't miss out on...i would also steer clear of the all metal military and go for the G10 handles, nicer feel that wouldn't slip out of your hand...

im not entirely sure, but the logo does appear to be laser etched...you should be able to take off the whole finish with some fine sandpaper, and then some metal polish to make it look all nice and shiny again...the Spyderco military is an incredible all around knife, you made a great choice.

The knife with just the words Military is the new version. If u have a pic of the old one whowing the choil, you will notice a slight difference between he old and the new military.

Just re-read the thread again and noticed something. The steel on the old one is in fact ats-34. They have stopped using ats-34 a few years ago. It is now cpm 440v.

Hey fortyOunces, they made an all steel version of the military?

The Military is the best choice for EDC, IMO. :D :D

I love my PlainEdge Millie (goes with me everywhere) so much that I'm also thinking of getting one with the combo edge. Sometimes I find that a partial serrated edge could come in handy.

As far as the etching, I think that you could take it off of the new version (just says "MILITARY") with some sandpaper. I left the lettering on mine....IMO it's more intimidating that way. ;)

They are both great knives, but my preference is for the plain edge version for it's versatility.

The black letter knives are the current production version, laser engraved. The Silver letter (your top picture) ones are an older version were the lettering was cut into the blade steel with a diamond cutter.

Good luck with your choice. Jeff/1911.

Jeff 1911 is dead on.I have a PE 440V laser engraved they did do some 440Vs with diamond engraveing.I would go with a PE to make sharpening easier.Seems to me that a 50/50 in 440V would be harder to sharpen.

Let a sheeple take a look at the Military and see what they say. The size of this Spydie is intimidating enough, but with the "MILITARY" laser etched on the blade.....it just adds that much more. :p

The fully serrated Military is one of my all time favorites. It is a true cutting machine and easy to resharpen on a 204 Sharpmaker.

Thanks for the advice, guys. One more question...what about the supposed brittleness of CPM440V? I read a couple reviews on it, and it seems as if it may not be well-suited for all cutting tasks...especially those involving harder cutting through tougher objects.

I have read some where that Spydercos 440V isn't as brittle as other companies.I have had no problems with mine.

Hmm, yeah, I saw that as well. I'm looking at a picture of the combo-edge Military...seems to be around 70/30 PE/SE...is this true, or am I seeing things? I don't really like the 50/50 combos, but perhaps one with a more biased edge type distribution wouldn't be so bad?

I much prefer plain edges to partial or fully serrated blades. To me, the PE is more versatile. Unless you use the knife 100% of the time for rope or fibrous material cutting I'd consider the PE. Partial serrations never did make much sense to me. Not enough serrations on the blade to be of any real use to me, I guess.
Also, in this day and age, the fully serrated model will draw more horrified sheeple stares and dropped jaws for some odd reason. You might find this particular attribute a plus depending on your job, motivation or point of view. This should be a consideration if your gonna go for the fully serrated Millie.
Good Luck!

All the best,
Mike U.

Oh! BTW, I have had no problems with brittleness, edge chipping or any other complications with Spyderco's 440V. I think they have the heat treat spot on.

about the fully serrated edge vs. the plain edge...a lot of people seem to think that unless you always cut rope, the serrations are of no use, but from my experience, serrations cut everything a plain edge will cut just better and faster...i guess you just have to try it to understand or disagree...

The serrated and plain edge versions are both good. The Military is one of the few knives that I like in serrated form; serrations just seem to work well with the design for some reason (although it does look scary).

I removed the laser engraving from one of my Militaries, but it was a surprisingly difficult project. You have to grind it off, then refinish the entire blade with successively finer grits of sandpaper. It took me decades to make the blade look presentable again.

I have knives in the fully serrated format. I was a fan for a short period. After using each for awhile, I find that I personally prefer plain edges.
You are correct that duckfsu should try different types of edges before deciding. Plain or serrated is purely a matter of personal preference.

FWIW,
I've been trying to give away a large FS Cold Steel Voyager Tanto for about two years now to different relatives as a present. I offer a choice of older models out of my collection to relatives for birthdays, graduations and such. They always choose a PE over the fully serrated Voyager.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is an inside joke about me trying to unload that folder.
