I have stockpiled a tidy sum of money that was going to go to Mike for a new custom project that I have been thinking about for some time and now he closes his shop. (Talk about bad timing on my part

I would like to know which other custom makers out there you would compare to Mike. I'm only curious about quality, choice of material, etc. I don't need to know about personal habits

.

Also, if you are aware of delivery times from those makers please post that here as well. As always, if you don't want to post here feel free to e-mail me at brianthornburg@home.com.

Thanks in advance,

If you tell us more about what this knife project is I think you could narrow it down to some specific makers.
ex.is it a folder,fixed,user,ect.

The project consists of two fixed blade camping knives--a large chopper and a smaller utility/food prep. knife.

I envision the larger blade with a spear point a la the MFK (but bigger) and the smaller one the size of the Nimravus Cub (give or take.)

Any further information I can provide let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Might want to check out George Tichbourne's site in the links. His gallery has alot of camping/hunting/utility type knives.

Brian_T,

If I were you first I would call Mike and see if he wanted to do it, 719-578-9226.
He may not but its worth a try, sometimes closing a business takes a little time. If he does you may have one of his last knives.
You never know.

Thanks for the responses everybody. Keep up the good work.

In the meantime, thanks John for the idea. I'm going to give Mike a call today.

By the way, I've been doing some searching on the forums and I like the looks of the Greco and Jones Bros. knives. Would either of those makers fall into the same category as Mike?

Thanks in advance,

Update:

I JUST spoke with Mike on the phone and he told me NO NEW WORK--his backlog is already too long. Ah well, it was certainly worth a try.

And now, back to the drawing board.

I talked to Ricky Folwer today at the Art Knife Show in Orlando. He is a very nice guy and makes great users at a reasonable price. Here is his link: http://www.homestead.com/customknives/homepage.html

Also, send Matt Lamey an e-mail. He makes just what you are looking for: rmlamey@ametro.net

It is hard to find someone like Mike Irie. I guess that Neil Blackwood or Lynn Griffith would be good choice.

I don't know Mike Irie, so I don't know how this guy compares with him. However, I have Steve45 doing a custom that I designed, small Nimravus Cub sized, out of A2. Mine is nothing fancy, just the full tang blade, and micarta scales. I have heard good things about his work from a couple of other people. You might try dropping him an e-mail at izzyknife@aol.com. He's a good guy to talk to.
