Question for woodchucks !!

Hickory would be stronger. If you are lucky to find a source and are willing to pay for it you can get what is called Impact Grade Hickory which is very, very, very strong. Also a pain in the rump to work but worth it.

I've found hickory more fibrous and "hairy" than oak. I'm not much of a wood worker though, but I prefer oak to work with. It's easier to shape with hand tools.

Brendan--stupid question, but since you are in the UK, why not look into blackthorn? It's very durable, and is traditionally used for canes/walking sticks/beating sticks, er, I mean shillelaghs :)

whats a hog cane Yvsa ??
An extra heavy cane for controlling hogs, both the four legged and the two legged kind.:D
A cane or walking stick disappears when carried as most people don't see them or the people carrying them. I continually have people step in front of me making me take the long way around when it's pretty damned obvious I don't get around well. :grumpy:
A pet peeve of mine. I always speak to folks in wheelchairs as they're another group that disappears in public.:(

hickory makes a great walking stick or cane.

Oak is heavier, IIRC.

here is a page where you can get a good "base" cane and shape and stain it to your liking.
These are made with combat in mind.
combat canes
I have one of CaneMasters Hickory Heart Combat Canes. Quad grip, sharks teeth, red eyes on a snakes head, and the shin ripper, part of the shark's teeth deal.:D
Great cane but on the spendy side, worth it though for more reasons than a couple.;)

Thanks guys - pardon my stupid questions - shilleleah's I know but never heard of a hog cane !!

Ok - I'm looking at the canemaster custom combat cane in either oak or hickory. Lady I spoke to tells me they are equal in strength but that oak is heavier and maybe a little prettier but again it depends as all canes are different !!

All I really care about is it must be the strongest and im not bothered about weight (heavy may be better for obvious reasons), as far as grain goes - if two canes are equally as strong but one is more attractive then I want the pretty one !!

:)

Am I talking about canes here ??

Canemasters also offers the raw stock canes (unaltered and unfinished). They are fairly inexpensive.

those are awesome!

(come with a steel pipe inside.... )

Two Dogs I got the hickory because it is stronger as well as lighter IMO. I don't think you can ask for prettier wood than hard hickory heart. It's a beautiful dark tan that glows in the dark with a little tender lovin care and several coats of mineral oil over several coats of tung oil.:D
