Question for you experienced hollow grinders.

Recently purchased a KMG thinking that I would start with flat grinds and later try my hand at hollow grinding. Well while just goofing off it seems to me that hollow grinding off the tool rest produces better results than flat grinding for me. It seems that in flat grinding I have a hard time feeling what I'm doing. Anyway my question is, is it normal to have to turn the wheel over while hollow grinding to produce an even plunge line. I looked at my wheel and it seems one edge is square and one has just a slight roll to it.
Thanks for the help
Jeff

Also while i find these to smilys funny :barf: :jerkit: what is this guy doing :foot:

Foot in mouth-I use that one a lot, or I used to at least...
A lot of makers put a slight radius on both edges of the wheel so it dresses the plunge cuts evenly on both sides. This is also commonly done with the platen, for the same reason.

I believe if it came that way it is wrong. I also believe that taking the edges off is a mistake. You can simply allow the belt to go over the edge and get the results needed. That might be a returned, used, wheel sent to you in error. Frank

I slightly radiused both sides of my holllow wheel. Not much mind you but enough that when I use a J flex belt I get a nice radius over the corner.
Many disagree with this wisdom, but hey it works for me and I do it to my flat platten also.

Im sure the wheel was a new, unused one. For all i know i might have been the one who rolled the edge when i was playing around. I do like the look of the grind that the rolled edge leaves better. I can see both sides of the argument about purposely radiusing the edge. For now i think ill leave it alone, switching the wheel and belt around slows me down a bit and gives me a chance to see how im doin.
Thanks for you time and replies

I have to agree with Frank. That wheel should have had sharp edges. I will order a new wheel when mine gets rounded.

"Drifting" the belt from side to side will produce a radius, it depends on how much you want. If you want a larger radius then you will have to contour the wheel to get the desired effect. I do reccomend having both a sharp and radius wheel. Some customers don't like a large radius.
