Question for ZT owners

I am slowly increasing my collection, both in quantity and quality. My next purchase is going to be the ZT 0350 Blackwash. And my question is this: Do the ZT speedsafe systems use a combination bushing system like my Kershaw Blur. Or does it use their ball bearing system? And if so, do you find that EDC tends to contaminate the bearings or are they decently sealed?

The ZT 350 uses washers like most ZTs and your Blur. Same exact function as your Blurbin fact. Alao about the same size just quite a bit beefier

No bearings...just the bushings. I don't know of any ZT "Speedsafe" assist openers with the KVT bearing system. As far as I know, the ones with KVT are all manual opening. In fact, I think all KVT knives are flippers, actually (anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the case?).

Here are a few links to the ZT catalog:
- Manual opening w/ KVT
- Manual opening (both flat washers and KVT)
- Speedsafe opening

To the best of my knowledge, all the Speedsafe models use the flat washers. As for the KVT getting gummed up with use, my experience has been that it is not much more susceptible to it than flat washers. Dirt and lint will get stuck in both, and they both can benefit from an occasional washing (open & close the blade several times while submerged in hot, soapy water, and then dry and oil as needed).

Flarp, do you recommend this over taking apart the knife and cleaning it?

I can't think of any folding knives that *need* to be disassembled to clean. As RevDevil said, it's really mostly just for curiosity... or if you're tinkering with or modding the knife. ;)

So is that what you would recommend also, hot soapy water?....I am totally up to suggestions

Absolutely. Hot water, Dawn dish soap is what I really like as it kills oil and grease like few other soaps can. You will also need some compressed/canned air also know as keyboard duster. It gets all kinds of water and stuff out of the inner workings. An old toothbrush to scrub on the G10 doesn't hurt either. A small dab of whatever oil you like and you are back in business. As an aside, the original 0560 I bought years back has been cleaned this way about 4 times. It runs super smooth even with no oil.

Cool, what about the cavity where the torsion bar is?

I had to disassemble my 350 to clean it after i gutted an elk. I never could get all the crap out of the liners. It was super easy to reassemble though.

Where are you reading about KVT getting gummed up with use? I'm not attacking you or anything, just like reading about different experiences :friendly_wink:

First-hand experience. It's not unique to KVT. It happens with every knife. Take a look at whatever knife you last carried. Look inside the handles and pivot area. All that lint and debris will mix with oil and moisture that's already on the knife (eg. grease/oil on the moving parts), transferred from you (eg. sweat), or from the material you are cutting. Over time, that stuff accumulates in the handle and pivot with carry and use. It doesn't cause the knife to stop functioning, but one of the symptoms may be that it doesn't open or close as smoothly as before. It's not a problem with the knife or even indicative of damage. Just a little bit of routine maintenance (ie. washing it out), and it's good as new. :)
