Question in my brand new GEC Stockman...

Is it normal for the blades to scratch against each other when I open them? The very first thing that happened when I opened the drop point blade on my Dixie Stockman last night is a scratch on the blade after scraping against the Wharncliffe. Just curious if this is expected with these multi blade knives as I'm not very well versed when it comes to traditionals. If it's normal and expected then I don't mind but if it's not supposed to happen then I want to get it taken care of.
 
All of my stockman patterns have some amount of blade rub, including my one GEC 3-blade pattern.
 
As AZRanchman noted it's basically universal amongst stockmen. The tightness in GEC's constructions and fittings make it much less a problem than in other brands. One way to avoid it or at least minimize it is to clean out the joints real well and keep the joints well oiled so it's easier to open the blades straight upwards smoothly rather than push them against each other when your grabbing the nicks.
 
I'd say it's inevitable, because the blades are so tightly packed and relatively flexible. When using the nail-nick you have to apply some inward pressure, which just pushes the blades together. Same thing on most split-spring whittlers.
It never really bothered me, just use that thing ;).
 
This is common with a three blade knife. It can be minimalized with a little bit of technique when opening the blades. Use just enough lateral pressure on the nail nick to pry the blade up enough to get a pinch grip on the blade. Then open the blade the rest of the way with a pinch grip. A lot of blade rub is caused by pushing the thin secondary blades into the main blade while opening. If you can pass a piece of printer paper between the blades when they are closed, then the rub is caused by too much lateral pressure when opening. If you can not pass the paper between the blades, or between the blade and liner, than it is a defect.

Yes you're right, and I'm just taking a guess here is that because the blades aren't crinked, there is less pressure.
 
As long as it's normal it won't bother me. Just as long as I'm not the only one getting scratches on his knife! Thanks, all. I will try to get a pic later.
 
None of my 25 or so USA made Schrade stockmans have blade rub.
Neither do any of the Camillus stockmans.
Just saying.
 
I've got Stockman patterns from Wostenholm, Taylor's Eye Witness, Case, Boker, and Rough Rider, and none of them have any blade-rub.

I have to say, it bothered me a good bit that my $10 > rough rider had no blade rub and my $100 < GEC 82 had enough that even when pinching it rubbed. I also had a 54 that rubbed, though not as much. Sorry for saying prices, but it's relevant.

I have a 66 on the way, and I really hope it doesn't rub.
 
Every Stockton I've ever held has had rub. Rough Rider, Schrade, GEC, doesn't matter.
 
I'll bet that before the internet, knife owners didn't notice or care about half of the things we talk about here. They just went out and used their knives.:p
 
Most of the two spring stockmans have a crinkled blade (bent to fit), so It's very common. As long as it is only a light rub, then it's nothing to worry about. I have a couple where the pen blade only rubs when you apply pressure on the nail nick to open it.
 
I often wonder what people with custom stockmans do. Even the best made 3-blade knife that closes without any rub at all can get rub when opening due to pressure on the blade. I know you can open the knife in a certain order to get the smaller blades out without issue, or take really great care to pull without pushing sideways at all...but that seems like a lot of hassle for a edc knife.

Does anybody carry a custom stockman, or similar, and if so, what do you do? Just let them rub a little since it is a user, or take extra steps to prevent it?
