Question: is there a "The" Traditional Grail knife

Hey all,

So a friend of mine who collect comic books was asking about "The Knife" the one we'd all go nuts over and everyone has an eye out for.

I tried to explain that there are so many interests and focuses in the knife collecting world that there really isn't one. Some folks like Barlows so the Russell Barlow maybe? but what about the folks who just like collecting case Barlows (surely there is such a fella or lass?), then there grail would be something else.

Anyway he said there was a comic or two that he, and most other, comic book collectors would go crazy over, I was wondering if a few more learned and well knowing here might be able to enlighten me, is there such a traditional knife that all want no matter what? feel free to post about what your "one" knife may be, of course, but I think other threads cover "grail" knives kind of well and I don't mean to create another one and clog up the forum. But is there a The "grail knife" with a capital "T"

I don't tend to keep many so it's hard to say I have an specific interest so mayeb that's the problem. I'm interested in no one area of traditional knives exclusively enough to be able to say a "one" knife. But I do favor Roberson (lot to learn before I'd pick a Roberson that all Roberson likes would want though) Schrades (8OT maybe?) and TL-29's (I like my Roberson TL-29, but a large part of that is that it was a gift from a very generous forum member here. And GEC, of course, (my 68 is my edc for example)

Anyway, here are some pictures in case this thread has been a total waste for you so far:

GEC 868 and a Roberson I found in a junk box

barlows that don't need introduction

an 8OT I edc sometimes

schrade TL-29 with lockback and ebony,

thanks for checking it out

No, there is no one knife that all knife aficionados would want, barring silly concepts like being given for free a knife with a $20,000 market value.

The hobby is way too broad in scope, with too many niche interests, for there to be any single thing everyone is interested in.

There might be a few genuine classics that appeal to everyone. The original Remington Bullets come to mind. But I agree that there is nothing like a universal collecting goal.

John said it, there's no such knife that would appeal to all as "The Grail Knife"

It' pretty personal I think, One man's grail maybe another man's fail.

Kris,.

There is none but it must:

The best edge retention.
The easiest to sharp.
The most ergonomic.
The best F&F.

at least.

For me there's no "GRAIL" search any more, not that I even knew what my "GRAIL" was. I thought I was always searching for the one, not knowing what the "one" was, just that I'd know it when it showed up

I can only say now that the "one" for me is my Clip Blade Gabon Ebony Barlow. I didn't know this when I purchased it from Charlie. It just kind of defined itself as time went on. It satisfied everything I was previously looking for. Don't get me wrong, I still long for the new releases and still buy some from time to time. But if I had to just walk away with one traditional knife, then my said "Barlow" would be the one ;)

Is there a universal "Grail" knife for the traditional user/collector, I'd think not...

Paul

now that's a purty interesting distinction isnt it?
if you had to walk away with just one knife (period)..would it still be the charlow?

I think grails for collectors who resell would be a lot easier to define.

Paul, I feel the same. I keep a pretty open mind although I do collect certain patterns. You just never know what you might run into at a show.

How could that be a "grail" knife? The maker isn't even competent enough to grind a nail nick in the blade to open it. Instead they had to drill a hole in the blade and install a thingamagig (lump) on the blade to open it. And then some nut decided to put a hole in the blade - I guess to hold the end of a a stick when roasting marshmallows or weiners.

Oh, I got it. It's one of those new fangled modern knives out of place in a traditional discussion.

Sorry I misread this post in the NEW POSTINGS, but thanks to your Douche Baggery I see my error. Thank You Mr.Perfect. Whats it like being at a near God like level of perfection?
I will tell stories of your greatness, to be handed down through the generations so centuries of future humans(and by then alien life) have a level of awesomeness to strive for.
From all of us now and the future ..THANK YOU!

BUt all that aside... SORRY, my bad!

Two I've been searching for and always miss on the exchange...
2011 forum knife
Tidioute 253113STL in ebony (I had one ordered, when it all fell through all other venders had no stock left)

I do find the whole grass is greener type fixation a little odd though. Why is it that I need these two so much? I have plenty of knives, beautiful knives that perform just as well I'm sure. The human mind is a complex thing.

Ahh Sarcasm, it always makes conversation more interesting. Although it offers a good chuckle. I think the score is even now and we can move on to the discussion at hand Gentlemen.

Paul, desire is only desire if unfulfilled. You can't desire it if you already have it.

I don't know much about Traditional knives. But if I were to start collecting them, Ive always heard good things about Barlows and T.A. Davison also makes some beautiful slipjoint knives.
