Question: Making handle liners?

I am asking this because I am genuinely curious and want to spark conversation. Call me gun shy, but I've seen about 50 instances in the last 3 days of people (not here) saying "Did you search, Did you Google, etc?" and it's literally making me nuts. Of course, now that I say that, someone will say it, so I have braced myself.:D

Seriously...I see people mention making them out of dvd cases and such, but how in the world are you guys getting them cut out perfectly shaped and smooth edged like I see in the pics? It seems like this would be extrordinarily hard!

Flexxx makes them on the regular. I'd PM him or just wait for him to get done "volunteering" at the petting zoo, he'll be in shortly.

Flexxx made the ones I have. However, they didn't fit perfectly upon arrival. To make them fit perfect I bolted them on, and then took my Mora and cut off the excess. Now they're perfect :).

I have no idea how he makes his, but if it were me I would trace the handles out on some cardboard or something and go from there.

And I didn't even tell you to google it :p.

Yeah...Tracing them out is the obvious part. Cutting them out perfectly nice and smooth? That sounds like witchcraft to me.

I traced them out on a dvd case, Used a remora to cut them and make holes, bolted them on and used a case peanut to cut off the excess.

I tried over and over and ultimately failed miserably to make liners out of DVD case plastic.

I just buy mine from Flexxx now. I'm five pairs in and next will be buying some for my Machax. All four sets of Becker scales and my one set of ESEE scales from him have been perfect. I think he's a machinist... or possibly a wizard.

Like was said above about tracing around the grivory, cut with scissors but leave a little big bolt it up to your knife and sand to size. You'll have to play around with the grits of sandpaper to get the finish you want.

It's the same principle as woodworking, there is no magic involved really. You would need a respirator, a set of files, sandpaper, some sort of Dremel tool or a belt sander, a vice, and a drill press. Many do with much less.

get two pieces. drill a hole through them. mount on the knife in one end or the other with one bolt. then you drill through the other two holes carefully. bolt the other two. now carefully use a sharp thing to trim all around. voila. plus, you don't have to demount them.

You use a machine like I do....I have a small cad/cam program that will run X/Y/Z.

there are a few that get away and need to be trimmed, I can fix this problem I just need 70-80,000 dollars for a good CNC......anyone?

and I'm half wizard.

I made some out of g10(really thin designed for liners),just drilled the holes roughed out the shape put them on and used my belt sander for the rest.

Theres 3 types of liners, G-10, vulcanised plastic and any thin piece of whatever. Cut it out roughly after tracing and then sand back till even with scales. Micarta is very tough so you dont need to be worried about making a dent in your scales.

I laid my handles on the case, traced them, cut them out with scissors... bolted the scales together with the liners in between, trimmed em with an exacto knife...then sand sand sand until perfect. not hard, just a lil time consuming to get em ''just right''

The only ones I have made were from copper so I used a belt sander. What most of the guys said makes sense to me. If you decide to give it a go be sure to post some pictures. I have been thinking about giving a try at making a plastic set.

I have tried twice to make liners out of a DVD case. Take your handle off and trace it on the plastic, cut out with scissors and sand the edges with sandpaper. I am great at getting them shaped but I ruined them both times trying to get the holes in the right place. I need to give up and buy some.

You don't really have to get them perfectly traced. Cut them more or less to shape, get them bolted in, and then use a belt sander or dremel to sand them to fit.

Also, Flexxx, does that mean you sleep with only one eye open? Bonus points if you know what author I'm referring to.

Messing around in the garage with my bk3 blank. I wanted orange so cut them out of home depot bucket lid.
