I am wanting to try to do some custom work myself. I want to try to make some scales for one of my 301's. The original scales are in good shape just want to try my hand at it. What is the best way to get the scales off, with no or minimal damage to the knife? I am a tinker by nature and I just have to try this.

Tox, Some 300s are different in the liner construction. Older ones are more "holy" but have less big holes, might be different for handle making, new SS ones have a scale shield moulded onto liner, older ones pop off frequently....Your on your own on gettin'em off, I only try to keep'em on.300$s
PS There is a thread about a month or two back where someone showed some photos with scales off and were talking about re-scaling.

late 1980's era

Post 1990 era, all S/S

...That's kina interesting. What's with the holes anyway? That certainly wouldn't be for "lightening" on a small knife that's relatively light already...hmmm...Maybe carrier holes for the prog dies...

D, Holy in the sense of honor*, actually the older ones had fairly full liners with holes only for direct use of attachment or pass-thru. I could only speculate that later liners have large cutouts for production/design needs. There are design changes in the 300s as you go from Schrade, to Camillus, to Buck manuf. Changes in liners and hinge pins happened but were easily overlooked by the buyer. I look forward to being on factory tour. * I think it is brass envy. 300$s

Schrade Buck, one end removed for pin sectioning photos of past thread.
