The knife is a benchmade 921 pre production model and the big problem is that the knife has opened three times in my pocket..without cause...I carry in my left empty pocket and when clipped to the pocket in a vertical postion the knife has opened several times I am wondering if anyone is having this problem.

I have owned lots of benchmades and have never had this happen befor.
This is however the first axis lock I have carried.

Needless to say I wont be using this knife clipped to the pocket in the future.

Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.

You should send that knife back to Benchmade. An Axis Lock knife should not open in your pocket. The spring should provide enough tension to keep it closed when you carry it. Benchmade is pretty good about backing their warranty so send it in.

I'll second what Anthony said. That should not happen. The 921 is, I believe, the new Warren Osborne model. BM has good customer service. They'll correct the problem for you.

Did you change the clip to the left side of the knife. I you didn't the knife can open because the thumbstuds are exposed. If the clip is on the left side the blade would ride next to the seam of the pocket and should stay closed. I have not had any problems with my 921 opening in my pocket.

Knife Dude

Thank you for your suggestions. What kinda tool to use for the strange looking screw heads on the knife.

It should be a T-6 Torx bit. You can find them at Sears in the precision screw driver section. They cost around 2-3 dollars.

Gary...good name btw ;)...does the knife prematurely open when you draw it out of the pocket? I've had that happen a lot on my 940 before, the thumbstuds catch and do the wave action against the lip of my pocket.

If not you may want to carry it in a sheath, take the nasty old clip off and see if it is more comfortable in your hand less the clip.

I'm tempted to pick up one of those knives, how does the smaller blade feel against your palm when using the main blade? It looks like it might dig into your hand?

Good luck and don't get cut!

Thanks for your response I am going to change the clip to the other side but I think I will just carry in a horz. sheath ala Micro Tech.

The knife is great one the best I have used...from benchmade. The small knife is super handy and not a problem for me to grip. I think someone with a very large hand might have a problem.

I would certainly reccomend this knife to anyone looking for a handy cutting tool. It seems to work well on anythink I have attempted to date.

The knife unlocking is real intersting...as the knife blade is under as much tension as others I have checked with an axis lock this morning.

I love my 921 (Pre-Pro #014) but I had to send it back to Benchmade the other day for warranty work. I had a problem with the slip-joint snagging my pockets. Turns out when closed, the tip of the blade rose above the side scales just enough to catch things (like 1mm or so). I suppose I could have cut myself if I had run my hand down the spine of the knife. The good folks at Benchmade took it back with no trouble and now I'm just counting the days until I get it back! Something to watch out for when buying a new 921. I didn't notice the problem until I started using it.

Still, it's a great design, very cool
