I live in MN and am aware there are state laws (and I'm guessing federal) which prohibit/limit owning and carrying these outside of being military, law enforcement, etc. Is there a permit one can buy to own and carry like firearms have? What if you are a knife-maker? Thanks ahead of time for the info.

Well, here's the laws themselves, in lay terms:
Federal: Sellers cannot sell to clients across state lines unless they are authorized military. Autos also cannot be imported into the US unless for the military. That's it for federal. Implication: If you want to buy, you have to buy from within your state or physically travel to another state that sells.
Minnesota: Mere ownership is illegal with the exception of "museums or collectors of art or for other lawful purposes of public exhibition." No permit is provided for by law. It would up to you, if arrested, to prove in court your lawful intentions.

The upshot: If you want to get an auto, you would have to travel out of state, buy there, travel back, and then keep the knife in a safe or locked display case.
