Since Benchmade can't bother to answer their email, I'm turning to the experts here at bladeforums. My question is this: Will Benchmade sharpen modified knives under their Lifesharp service? I have a Griptilian w/ aftermarket Wilkins scales and I'm not sure they'll sharpen it, and I don't really want to find out the hard way....

You should refer to my thread here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=799228

I'm sure they'll sharpen it no problem, but you should give them a call first: 800.800.7427

It should take about 4 weeks to get it back since the day you sent it and will come back nice and sharp.

If it took four weeks for a company to sharpen my knife and I didn't already know how to sharpen, I'd use those four weeks to figure it out.

I would highly suggest learning how to sharpen. The amount of time in transit, plus cost of shipping plus insurance will quickly add up.

Not to mention you can put a better edge on your knives then they can (once you learn).

I guess stuff does happen but my recent experience with BM has been more than satisfactory...

I sent in my new Mini Ritter because the blade wasn't centered and they returned it in a week or so with a new blade, adjusted the axis lock and sharpened...

I just sent in a full size Ritter to have the Axis checked out as it was making a pinging sound and they emailed me to say they received it and that repair and sharpening time was 2 or 3 days...I expect it back next week...

I sent 3 806's back to BM for some service and sharpening. Had them all back in about 8 days no problems. They aren't always the fastest/best with answering emails, I'm sure due to their spam filters combined with email volume. Calling usually works best. Many of my Benchmades are modified in some way, handle scales, etc, and they've never had any problem with it.

Benchmade like every other production knife company is getting ready for SHOT show. I'm sure you picked up the phone and spent 3-5 minutes on a call they would be able to speak with you. Will they sharpen a modified knife? Not sure, I think knife disassembly voids your warranty.

Sharpen it yourself. It will cost you $10 to send the knife there and get it back. You'll have to do this quite a few times. After 5 times, it's cheaper to just buy a Sharpmaker (Which will last a very long time). Plus, BM's factory edge is horrible, so the edge you can put on it is much better anyway.

I don't live in the US, so I can't count on this, but even if I could, I like to sharpen my knives myself... Try to learn how to do it... It will give you much more joy to carry a knife sharpened by you...

And, of course, if you learn how to do it, I bet you can get a much sharp and beautiful edge than the one sharped by factory... ;)

I'm gonna sound like an echo here... but I agree with learning to sharpen yourself. You can do it by investing in something like a Sharpmaker, watching the DVD a few times, practicing on a couple of kitchen knives, and then moving on to your BM, all in the time it would take to send it in and get it back from BM.

My second point is that I've used BM's W&R service on several occasions (but nothing in the last few months) and they've consistently been one of the fastest in turnaround time. The last time I used them I sent in a mini-Ritter for blade centering and it was gone a total of 10 days including travel time. Came back 100% perfect.
