Folks this is my first post in the Becker forum. I have a question if someone doesnt mind answer. I notice the BK77 with s30v and green canvas handles. Says limited to 150 pieces. Can anyone tell me if this knife was built to be used or just as a safe queen. It really has struck my fancy but I'm not into safe queens. One of my concerns is I have read of s30v chipping on hrd use knives, but I have no experience myself with it. The only s30v I have is a Buck 110. Most of my fixed blades are Bark river, Faalkniven, and an ESSE. I'm open to any comments.

Sorry, I'd love to write something helpful, but I don't have any experience with S30V. What I can tell you though is that stainless steels are less suited for a chopper (if you want to use the 77 as one) because they can take less shock and are more prone to breaking due to repetitive chopping or even batoning. High-Carbon Spring steels are much tougher and can take a lot more abuse.

Oh, looks like the post was still somewhat helpful :D

take care

Becker does not make safe queens. Period. The BK77 can be used just like any other Becker.
To my knowledge, however, the Extremes are now history. I ordered one from Ka-Bar when there were just a handful left.
I'm in agreement, however, that the carbon steel is better suited to a hard-use knife, though my take is more anecdotal than experiential.
What that means is that I haven't extensively used a big chopper in S30V, nor have I seen one of the Extremes with any substantial wear on it.
Moose bought one to beat, if I remember correctly, but I don't think he's had time to do anything with it.

I'm sure the warrant is just as good, buy it, use it, it's covered. Thing is, for a chopper, you don't need the stainless. Unless you just want to have that knife, get the normal one. Or if you like spending that kind of money, get a custom knife, or a smaller knife in that steel.
I don't think you can go wrong either way, unless you buy the 77 and don't use it for fear of it chipping. Life is too short to worry or let yourself be bothered by small chips in a blade. Use it like you stole it, it's got a great warranty.

Well the one I was looking at just sold. There might be more out there if I decide to go for it.

closer to 275-300 iirc on the kabar variant. not that rare. no idea on the original cammilus relase. so it's uncommon, but not stupidly rare. also, permanently out of production now.

user: hell yes. hard use objects may see damage. there is no wonder metal. so, use common sense when chopping manhole covers, vises, and yeti...
