Question on blade thumb holes

Can you guys with Spydercos (or any other thumb-hole knife) POP the blade to full lock using a single thumb flick? Or are knives with thumb holes intended to be opened by "walking" the thumb to full open position?

I'm new to this and, among my 6 knives, the just-purchased Benchmade Mini Skirmish is my first with a thumb hole. All the rest have thumb studs and/or flippers. All the studded knives can be popped open with a single movement, but I can only pop the 635 halfway open using the hole. Is the hole not conducive to popping full open and I should accept that and just "walk" it open? Otherwise I might do the Dremel mod to rid the hole chamfer on the Mini Skirmish (previously mentioned elsewhere) and get a better thumb purchase.

The knife is sweet otherwise!

Thanks for any thoughts...

The Riveted spyderco's no. The others yeah

The spyder Hole is used more for critical tasks. Such as a Fireman, needing to rescue somebody. That is why spyderco is meant for the Firemen, police, fishermen, lumberjacks and whatever other jobs you can think of. Just knives meant to work in any given situation.

The thumb stud is good but really can’t compare to the hole. The hole is just a better design.

It’s all opinion. The average person is not using the knife for

I can do this on my BM mini AFCK.

My spyders ... nope. Doesn't bother me much though TBH.

I much prefer holes to studs. (I'm sure there is a good joke in that sentence ....).

Anyway, I can open all of my Spydercos and my SnG all the way with one thumb movement in the holes. No problem.

No, most Spyderco's I can't open with a thumbstud style flick. However it is not a problem with my griptilians.

My larger Spydercos (all riveted FRNs) I have difficulty flicking with my thumb; about 50%/50% that I get it right. This isn't a problem though, I really don't bother. I just flick with my wrist. My Calypso Jr however I can flick easily with my thumb. Which is nice, since it's difficult to wrist flick such a small/light knife.

The only knife I've ever been able to flick open (other than an illegal switchblade I had when I was a kid) has been a CRKT model with a "flipper". It's not a great knife otherwise, but it's fun to play with.

I also prefer the Spyderco holes to thumbstuds.

Of course, you can open a Spyderco with one snapping motion by gripping the blade with thumb and finger at the round hole.

I can thumb-flick open all my spydercos. A few of the plastic-handled knives need to be broken in a week or two first, but all of them can be flicked open fast, especially with the addition of a little wrist flick.

On the other hand, I normally don't do so -- I've seen too many people end up flinging their knives across the room. Might've even happened to me a time or two :)

You can do it with the SpyderHole. Just takes some practice.

Nothing else like the SpyderHole in my opinion. I used to use ThumbStud knives but after I tried the hole one time......I was hooked. It's all over now. I've been bitten by the Spyder :D.

Try spyder dropping that Skirmish.

Yeah, I have a spyderco rescue (the smaller one), and it can be done with a little flick of the wrist in addition to using your thumb.

ARG. People make it sound like thumbstuds are prone to falling off in critical times, cutting up your thumb like razor wire, and they may possibly be posessed by demons.
Fact is, either you prefer one or the other. I prefer the thumbstud for several reasons: It's faster, easier for me to flick open in one motion rather than "walking" the blade open, and more than anything, it doesn't take up space. You'll notice a lot of Spydercos don't fold up as compact as many other knives, the extra space for the darn hole makes the blade like 1/2" taller out of the handle when folded up. My Cold Steel is way better in the pocket than any Spyder I've seen that's near that size.

But like I said, some people prefer the hole. Just try them both out and get what you like

Yeah, z537....I got used to the studs and they work easier for me, no problems at all. Noticeably harder to flick the Mini Skirmish hole, but apparently a Dremel to the chamfered hole will cure it.

Fisher...just tried the Spyder drop method and that works great....very easy movement. Duh, didn't know about that one. Just gotta make sure you don't drop the knife, lol. :D

Same but different to me. I like on liner locked studs you can hit the stud and have the blade flying out.
The hole is more positive and assuring

Odd...

I have never had any problem opening my spydercos with single thumb flick. No wrist action necessary. Did it every day a hundred times a day at work.

I though that's the way it was supposed to be done.

Forget your thumb!

Use your index or middle finger on the other side of the knife in the hole to flick the knife open along with a wrist flick. I can do almost any ambi knife this way including all the Spydercos. It's ultra-fast for tip-up carry knives on the draw and open because you just flick as you're raising the knife.

I never had a problem hitting the hole but have on several occaisions missed the studs on a few different brands.tom.
