I bought my first Buck , a personal fixed blade in 1977(no longer made), a buck 110 folding hunter in the late 70's and a buck Special in 1985. Could anyone tell me if these blades are 440c steel? Thanks for any input.

The two from the '70s are 440C. The switch to 425M happened around 1985 or so; someone with definite knowledge will chime in with the facts regarding that.

Winchester, I agree with Lambert . The switch to 425M was a few years earlier in 1982 . But I'm curious, did the previous owner say he bought the 118 in 1977 as us collectors cannot determine the exact year Buck made those sheath knives . Also, yes the 118 Personal is no longer made "In regular Production" but is often in Limited Edition format .
I hope you enjoy your Bucks and hand them down to your sons . DM

Your 85 is 425M like Lamertiana says.......switch happened in 81-82.

All great steel.

:)

As I read it, the OP bought the 118 in 1977...

I think the question was posed just to make sure he didn't buy it used in 1977.

No I did buy the personal new as a teenager at a local hardware store back in the 70's. By the way, i haven't heard of 425M steel. What is it comparable to? 440a, 440c other?

Winchester, Ok, thanks . Buck's 425M steel is a good user steel, comparing to AUS8 . Buck used it from 1981-92 . It has about all the elements in it to make it a good edge holder and a good stainless . It requires alittle more stroking on a stone to sharpen than 420HC but worth it . Try it and let us know what you think . BG, yes that was why I ask . DM
