Recently I want to buy a Buck Strider 880SP folder. In my location its price is around US$160. Is it worth that price? And could someone that familar with it give me some comments on this knife? Thanks in advance for any input.

Tony

Hi there and welcome to the forums!

First off, the Buck Strider is a wonderful knife and I myself should be receiving the tanto point version in a couple of days. If you use the "search" option you can read for yourself all the wonderful, and not so wonderful, things that are said about them. Retail is $190.00 US so your $160.00 is in fact a discount. However, they can be obtained for $120.00 or a little less if you keep your eyes open. I think you will be happy with the product, regardless of the price. They are very rugged and beg to be used.

Thanks Wire Edge. I'm new here and look forward to learning more from you guys here!

I'm in China so it's impossible for me to obtain a price around $120! :( A guy in my place is selling 880 that he brings from USA privately at about $160. I guess I may start to count how many bucks I have in my wallet. :=)

I just got a Buck/Strider limited production run in BG-42 steel and it is great. I was very reluctant to buy the knife because when I first handled it, it seemed kinda "blocky" and thick. But the price was right and I am very glad I bought it.

Some people will say that it is too big for an every day carry knife. I normally carry a Sifu so the Buck/Strider doesn't feel too large to me. For some people who may be used to smaller knives the Buck/Strider will seem very LARGE. Yes the handle is thick, but in normal jeans it carries well. For an outdoor, hunting, camping knife it is great.

It is built like a tank, so the overall construction impressed me a lot. If your in the market for a big, strong, folding knife this one is pretty hard to beat especially for the $$$

I'm waiting for a Small Spearpoint in BG-42 from BadAss Knives.
To tell you the truth, I've never been so anxious to receive any knife as this. I've handled the large version at a knife shop and decided it was altogether too large. When I found out that a small version was available, in BG-42, I jumped. I'm paying $160, which is a bit high, but there aren't many of these left so I figured, "what the hell, it's only money"
I plan to use it for the times when I just can't subject my large Sebenza to something nasty.
So far, the only negative I've heard about the knife is that the G-10 handles are too blocky. Nothing a Dremel can't take care of.
I'll post a review after it gets here and I've had a chance to use it a bit.

I think that you should go for it. I have a mini that I acquired in a trade here and I've been very happy with it. The mini really is a block but man is it tough. The only thing that I don't like is that the liner flexes a bit. But I've used it and abused it, again and again, and no failure yet. It passes the good old spine wack with no problems. It is a really great outdoors knife and a great chopper.
Get one, you'll be happy you did

Thanks to all for the encouraging feedback! I talked to the guy again and the price is now about $143 after negotiation, and I decided to place the order. Also I looked into some threads here and seems a problem is the Buck Strider is TOO big! But I'm 6 feet 4 inches tall and I think that should not be a problem. :)

Look forward to joining you guys to be a proud owner of Buck Strider!

You'll love it...Enjoy!

Finally..., yes, finally!! I got it! It's a large Spearpoint in ATS-34!

In fact it's not as big as I've expected. :) I have big hands and the Buck Strider Spearpoint just fits me well! Anyway I found it really hard to unlock for the liner is too solid, though it gives me more confidence in the secure locking up. I love the mark of Strider and the mark of Bos heat treatment on the blade. I have a question though: is every Buck Strider exactly heat treated by Mr. Boss or just overseen by him?

No problem it will be my EDC. I think I won't let it leave me at least for a little while. :)

Another foolish question: being new here, I saw some classic test called "spine whack". Could someone please give me some clue of this concept?

Thanks again.

Congrats on your purchase. Last year, I got my 880 tanto for about $140 but I traded it and after reading these posts I wish I never had done that. You're not the only one who likes the Strider crest (Flying War Penis), I got it tattoed :D .

Oh yeah, the spine whack test is when you open your folder, holding it by the handle, edge up, and give it a few moderate whacks on the back of the blade. This test for lock strength. Remember to use safety in doing this.

Anyone looking for a large tanto version, go to www.midsouthshooterssupply.com . About $110 shipped. I bought two of them from Midsouth earlier this year. Been dealing with them for years, great service on top of the great prices.

Thanks Solid_soldier for explaining on the "spine whack".

Could anyone share something of Buck Strider's heat treatment?
