Just received my first "real" compass a silva guide. I have heard not to carry a knife right beside the compass? How big a deal is this? I have been carrying it in the front pouch of my bag and my knife is behind it. should i change carry positions? or does it only effect it if the knife is directly on it?

Thanks for any info:)

As far as I know metal only effects the compass if you're trying to take a reading. Meaning you don't want metal near it or it may skew the needle. Once the metal is removed the needle will act like normal and point to wherever the magnetic pole is. Now magnets on the other hand can mess your compass up by reversing the polarity.
