I recently be came the owner of an older model Cold Steel Recon Tanto. It's basically just like the standard CS Tanto, only the blade and the brass guard and pommel have a subdued dull finish. It has a black leather sheath. Both are in excellent shape. When were these made? One source said they might have been made for Desert Storm. Another said they were the original CS factory seconds. What's the value?

Hey Nyghtfall..

If it has a brass guard,, then it is not a Recon Tanto...

The Recon Tanto has the guard built into the Kraton handles..

The black coating is also a bit of a crinkle finish to it..

Not sure what you have there,,but its not a Recon Tanto...

If you are concerned about it being a 2nd,, it will have a big #2 burned into the pommell...

Hope that helps..

Sorry, but it is a "Recon Tanto", it's factory marked on one side and "Cold Steel Ventura, Ca." on the other side, plain as day. I have owned a standard CS Tanto in the past and it identical with the exception of the dull finish. The sheath is even identical to the Tanto I had back in the '80s. It's not one of those black coated blade, all-rubber-handled Tantos. I think this one came along long before they did. I'm not really concerned about it being a 2nd. It looks great, and is sharp as h#@%. If I knew how post a photo here I would do so. Send me you e-mail address and I'll send you a pic.

Cold Steel used to make Recon Tantos with a bead blast blade, and bead blast guard and pommel made of brass. The current incarnation of the Recon Tanto has a black epoxy coated blade with a handle fully encapsulated in Kraton. The older model pre-dates Desert Storm.

I've got one of those old Recons. I can't remember exactly when they were made but I don't think it was for more than a year or two. I remember reading at one point that they were contract made by Buck for Cold Steel. But as Bernard Levine is quick to point out, everything you read about knives is not necessarily true. However, if they were made by Buck, you might get some info by posting on that forum. Good luck, I'd appreciate a little more info myself.

I have a couple of black and white photos, but don't know how to post here. If anyone would like to see them just send me an e-mail and I'll send them to you.
Anybody want to guess at the value of this knife?

Thanks
