i bought a Maxx off of a forumite and i cant stop playing with it. you push this "thing" on the side and then flick your wrist and the blade pops out. its very addictive.

my question is: are there models from other companies in a 3.5 to 4 inch blade that work like this? the Maxx is rather impractical cause its so big. also, i'm lefty and you cant move the clip. although i dont have to have a lefty friendly model.

BTW..... who invented this?

thanks...........Bill

The Cuda Maxx is about as smooth as it gets. But the Benchmade Skirmish 630, with its heavy 4+inche blade opens fast and easy. So does the smaller Ritter Grip (RSK).

The "thing" you're referring to is called a "flipper". And to my knowledge the Cuda MAXX is about the only folder out there that uses a flipper and doesn't have assisted opening.

If you're interested in a small blade with something like a flipper you'll probably have to look at assisted openers from Kershaw(Leek, Chive, etc) or Camillus(Heat, Dominator, Blaze, etc).

There might be some smaller "flipper" equipped blades that I'm not thinking of or aware of, I'm sure the others will be able to chime in.

As for the Cuda MAXX not being practical....have you tried carrying it? I find it to be the most comfortable "mega" folder out there. I was simply amazed the first time I slid it into my pocket and carried it all day. Most of the time it accompanies me everywhere I go...and simply works and carries great. Practical in terms of using it to open a box or the mail, it works great. Practical in front of the sheeple though the answer is definitely no! So I carry a SAK for that.

Glad you're enjoying your Maxx...have you tried "waving" it yet? :D

The thing is called a "flipper". Take a look at the CRKT M16 series, also the Hammond Cruiser. But these are lower end knives, compared to the Maxx.

Not quite sure what your question is but will try:

1. do not know who invented the flipper

2. the Maxx is designed by Darell Ralph.

Have to agree with RandomMan about the ease of carry - fits in my pocket without a problem - amazing for such a large folder.

Most linerlocks flip open really easily. I just felt a CRKT Kasper folder that was really nice, but it's heavy and only AUS6 steel.
If you can find one with an adjustable pivot screw (e.g. CRKT M16, S&W Tact. Ops) it'll open really nicely, though you often sacrifice the tightness of lockup for this.

The ti-lite has a way too small hand guard that acts like a flipper. As a matter of fact the flipper works better than the actual thumbstud.

Not on my Ti-Lite it doesn't. Of course mine is so smoothe now, it's always mistaken as an auto.

The 4" Ti-lite models have a feature that can be used as a flipper, but its not very ergonomic, and its anyone's guess whether or not it was actually designed to be used that way. The 6" model lacks this feature.

How about Kershaw assisted openers? Flipper+assisted opening make these knives fun to open, and the quality is excellent for the price.

Take a gander at the Camillus Dominator. It's a ROBO assisted flipper (like Kershaw's Speedsafe). www.agrussell.com exclusively offers a non-assisted model that retains the flipper. 3.65" S30V blade, titanium framelock. Sounds like just what you're looking for.

Which blade style did ya' get?I got the stiletto, but would love the bowie style, what a pair! It's so cool, and with practice so fast.I can't rave enough about this knife,Darell Ralph design.D-2,Titanium frame. And how about the black zippered case/pouch,it could pass for a glasses or sun glasses case if one were to carry it.That being illegal in my state,I can't do that.hehe.

Go with Planterz' suggestion. AG's Dominator is a bit more expensive than the standard model, but it has no assisted opening which may be a good thing depending on where you live. It's also one less thing to break and have to get repaired. PLUS it's anodized blue which I think makes it look a damn sight cooler than the regular Dominators.

Darell Ralph designed a Smith and Wesson H.R.T. with the same design guard and flipper. I had one and it was a verry smooth action. Good knife for the price.

Look for a smaller CUDA Maxx to be coming from Camillus. Might even be at Blade. From what I was told, it will be constructed the same as the HEAT.

The Cuda Maxx 7.0 is easier to carry than I thought it would be. It doesn't go with some dress pants though, so I have to alernate with smaller knives. I carry my Cuda Maxx on a lanyard, so I can wave it open. I put a hole in a pair of denim pants. The blade didn't open, the flipper poked the hole. Now I still use the lanyard, but also use the clip, depending on the pants. I'd like to get the 5 inch version also.
