Question on ESEE6 and BK7 Blade Width

Hard to believe but I've never had a 4 inch plus fixed blade in the last 45 plus years of knife use, always been in the axe/saw/small knife camp. So I'm looking at getting my feet wet with either a ESEE 6 or a Kabar Becker BK7 and would like to know the blade width (spine to edge) say near the handle? I like the blade geometry of the ESEE 6 the most but don't care for the finger choil in front of the handle. No shop around here carries them or anything like them.

Any other options out there? Primary use is for bushcrafting, want to try the 6 plus inch length, don't want a blade over 3/16ths thick and budget wise in the area of $120 max.

Thanks,

Jerry

my esee-6 is exactly 1.5in wide just above the choil
bk-7 is 1 5/8in wide just ahead of the thumb ramp

both are good knives, if your going to be doing more chopping/baton the bk-7 will fit well, thing is tough and still a good slicer.
The esee is better at carving and food prep but still tough enough for the above.
The esee does have a better sheath imop

If cost is an option go with the bk-7

Of the two I like the ESEE quite a bit more...I like the profile, the grind, and the sheath of the ESEE 6 (not to mention the extra accessory pouch that is avail.). The BK7 appears a little stockier than I like, but looks looks like I could re-contour the steel in the handle area easier to make it fit me (the choils and the contour of the handle on the ESEE 6 would probably be in the way for me to try that).

What else is available that is similar? Carbon steel I should add.

Thanks,

Jerry

i was in the same situation a few days ago with the bk-7 (i don't like the false edge/swedge and thumb ramp) vs. esee-6 (i don't like choils). jnieporte recently posted a mora thread and his mora c-223. i just got mine a few days ago. nice ergos, carbon steel, scandi grind and very light...all for $20! if you already have a regular mora and like it, you already know what i'm saying :)

If you want to go REALLY big, you can find the Browning Crowell-Barker knife on line for like $97.

I like both knives but another favorite of mine is the Condor Tool & Knife "Hudson Bay" & The "Toloza" or the "Varan CampKnife" ! It's gonna be hard to beat the price on the Condor's...don't let the price fool you, these are some really tough, solid built knives with qualit leather sheaths & Awsome customer service ! Another way to go if you don't mind waiting a month or two is a hansmade....check out Bryan Breeden or Mark Wohlwend !
