I am attempting to make my first leather sheath (and first leather work at all) with a minimum amount of tools. I think Ive got my list down from looking at all the tutorials available here. My question is the starter kit Im buying allows you to specify 3, 4, or 5 mm spacing for the stitching chisel. What size would you recommend - I was planning on using this 1mm Tiger thread (https://www.amazon.com/1-0mm-Ritza-Tiger-Thread-Polyester/dp/B01MR42JFH)

agree, 4mm would be the go to size I think for sheaths, smaller spacing would be for things like wallets or watch straps and with thinner thread as well.
Good luck on your work!!

Nice stitching there! I have a few but seem to always fall back on my quite old but still serviceable Craftool 8042 which is a 3/32" prong, it provides enough room for me to use the saddle stitch with the two needle method that I am growing to like a lot.

I picked up some 3mm and 4mm and have used both, the 3mm by mistake and boy that seemed really really tight stitching, here's a photo showing a spacing comparison, the sheath at the top used the Craftool and 1.2mm tiger thread

Doubling back at the beginning and ending of the stitching to keep those points tied down tightly

This sheath I started to hammer in the stitching holes and "Thought" I was using the 4mm but after I hammered in two sets I thought wow, that seems really close together! and examined the tool closer and saw it was the 3mm :( but...I had already put so much time into this sheath I had to continue and it was a LOT of sewing through some very thick leather!

BOTH boxes had the same photo of 4mm set on them...of course lol

So, depends on what brand I think you pick, but the ones I had that said 3mm were too close for me to use.

Hmm, 3/32" is 2,38mm. That tool must be 3/32" openings (and "tooths"), while the 3mm is center to center? I agree the 3mm looks too close together for that leather/thread, but at least it didn't ruin the look of the sheath.

My stitching chisel is measured by the space between the thick part of the chisels, not the tips. I like the 1/8" chisel because it looks better going around curves and turns. A wider spacing would not look as neat.
