Bargs, I left my sheath in the hot sun (dashboard of my truck) and the stuff blistered off. Looks kinda scabrous, but now I don 't have to worry about getting that "first scratch or ding" on it. I always take my working blade gold prospecting and it do get used.

I have some scrap pieces if you want me to do any experiments on some I am more than willing. I may try to bleach a piece and see what happens? I doubt you can leave bleach on it very long before it will driy out and or damage but im clueless. I bet Pugs has a few tricks in his bag:thumbup:
Bookie: If you leave a blade on my dashboard during the summer it may loose its temper:eek:

Hey Ndog, when in your dumpster diving forays if you happen to run into a transmission for a 2000 Ford Van, let me know, wait.....if it's in the dumpster it's probably no good...................never mind...............I already have one of those...

You think a blade on the dash board could get hot enough to lose it's temper? Really?
I guess it could get plumb hot withe windows up and all enclosed and down in your neck of the woods. Maybe so.

well I read running the sheath under water, cant remember hot or cold, the black will come off, with some scrubbin,i seen a few pictures of em without the black,i like the tan/brown color,it was some survival forum. I know some kukri come with lighter colored sheaths,i alwy"s wanted one,why not do it myself. I gave away 2 kukri past month or so,to friends and I couldn't afford another hi right now, think ive bought 5/ 6 now past few years, luv hi,,got a great deal on a off brand 15" angkhola off this forum, all I could afford right now,I think khhi, its on its way,be here Friday.gonna try and deblack the sheath..

Bargs, A number of blades lately have come with the tan and lighter colored sheaths original. I am sure removing the polish/coloring can be done, and I don't know how. But I wanted to point out that not every khuk started with a black sheath.

It's some of those cheap khukuris from India which have non-waterproof black coloring on the sheaths. The quality of HI sheaths is much better, and the leather is properly dyed.

Once you get it lighter than you want it you can always use shoe polish in the shade you want.
Dang Bawanna! I wish you would have tole me it was a 2000. I saw a 1998 4R70W with a 4.6 DOHC engine still attached. I should have grabbed it and chunked it over into the back seat of my Toyoty. Ill check it again in the morning and see if its still there. Cars get about 170 in the summer here. Wont hurt temper but will definitely kill any bugs in you Khuks.
Ill try to scrub a piece of buffalo tonite and see if it changes color. Guess i better get it wet now.

edit: Ah what Steve says! Quality dye! Only at HI:thumbup:

Guess I need to move to Texas. Much better dumpster diving. And I already have a hat.

Lost the beard long ago, mustache is alive and well but still have the hat, although I usually wear the black one.

Dang Dude! You look good! Ready for Downtown:thumbup: You'd fit right in down here! Ya got some boots yet?

I thought everybody down there went barefoot and the whole boot thing was urban legend?

I used to have boots but don't know how I'd get em on or off now or if I'd even know if they were on.

Maybe I can get some of them fake zip up wannabe a cowboy boots? Do they check that stuff at the border?

Son happened to catch that shot as I was facing down Black Bart down at the red dog saloon. Neither of us were armed so nobody was injured in the making of this photograph.

I have no tricks to take off dye, usually once it's on,it's on, you will get some to rub off, try some rubbing alcohol it will take some off but you will need to condition it after or it will dry out especially the leather that wraps the khuks, usually it paper thin on some, HI is a bit thicker that he norm. Heck you could pick up some very thin leather and redo it for just a few bucks. When I first started in leather work I would deconstruct some cheapo khuk scabbards and they were pretty simple although I have never reworked one in leather, done a few in canvas that came out cool as heck.

I wish I still had the pics, but alas I had to clean out my photobucket awhile back and there gone, but it was pretty cool.

I stripped an older HI sheath and redyed it. The leather store to me to strip with acetone, worked like a charm. I dyed it with a liquid dye and after that dried I used a black acrylic leather finish on top. It's the best looking sheath I have. Once it dried I condition it like any other leather sheath.

ndoghuse, IF this miscreant from Corn Patch WAS stoopid enough to put a khukuri on YOUR dashboard, it wouldn't be the temper that would be lost, but the whole dang shiv!! Somethin' about yer deep set, beady little eyes that alerted me to your nefarious alter-ego....an' Bawanna, "Black Bart", well shucks, pard. I was married to'er fer 13 years.

I could see that going very wrong! My beady little eyes would be laying in the back seat if... !

Awww heck! Black Bart was a normal looking character around my parts. It was that Captain Kangaroo that scared me! My brother actually won a spot on that show and got to meet them both! Lucky him!
