Question on making a leather strop

I have an 18" X 1.75" piece of leather, vegetable tanned. I want to make a strop as a final sharpening for my knives. I may have put the cart before the horse as I loaded a 12" section with red polishing compound, leaving about 3" on each end with no compound. Now my question, what do I do next?!?
