I'm looking at the Manix 2 with the black G10 handles and black blade.

Question I have is on some sites the Ball Bearing Lock looks like its encased in clear plastic, while on somes others it looks to be encased in a black material (plastic?). Which is the correct current version? To me the black encased Ball Bearing Lock looks nicer.

Thanks.

Depends on the blade. If you get the coated black blade you get the translucent black thumb thingy. Un coated blade clear. At least for the 2013 models others may have more insight.

I think the XL version with a clear lock is the older one with solid liners. The XL with black lock is newer and has skeletonized liners.

If the manix 2 have or will have a black lock I don't know. I think it was mentioned by someone that the lock on the manix 2 would be changed to a black one. But I'm not sure, it might just be my imagination!

2014 Catalog shows all version of the Manix 2, including the XL and Lightweight, with black cages for the ball bearing but I can't say for certain whether that change has actually been fully implemented. Even if it has, some dealers may still have the older versions in stock. If cage color is a deal maker/breaker for you, the best thing you can do, short of buying in person, is to purchase from a dealer you can call, and ask them to check stock and confirm the color before purchase.

Thanks for clearing it up. I would prefer the black cage, so I'll make sure to call before ordering and wait untill 2014 models roll in if I have to.

Yeah, the black cage is the one to have.
There were some issues with the clear version
earlier in production. Some sticking and a
few breaking as well. The black cage is the newer
version that has been improved and is more
reliable.

Been using the Manix 2 CF S90V version since release and have never had a problem with the lock.

Can you back that up with a link to a quote from someone at Spyderco? If not, my guess would be that they just added some dye to the plastic to make them black.

Do you guys think that the Caged-ball-bearing-lock (did I get that right) can stand up to whittling/carving pressures. Just wondering...

To the OP, my Manix 2 can with the black cage. I have the black DLC model.

S90V version has a black cage.
The ball lock on mine seems extra sticky and hard to unlock, which I like in a work knife.
