I have a 1.25 inch octagonal bar that I know was made between the 1930's and 1950 sometime, but not sure. It says, "Ingersol Rand Sandvik made in Sweden". Is this material any good for knife making or not. Was thinking of having some large loppers made out of this stuff, but is it worth it to even try. Any info on this material would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, Cobalt....That sounds like an old high quality tool.....or the remnants of one at least!!Tha name Ingersol Rand Sandvik is of a profesional tool company that makes a variety of air powered tools and accessories. So it sounds like some excelent steel. Especialy if Darrel wants it!!
But if you dont have a way to forge it into a knife blade you may want to go ahead and take up on his offer and make the trade for the flat stock. I'm sure Darrel would make the trade fair so you wouldnt be out anything other than alot of work getting that bar into the shape of a knife!!!!

Good luck to ya!!! Chris S

Darrel, I left you a messege on the phone.
What kind of flat stock were you thinking about.

Sandvik is a steel mill that has been around for a long time. They produce or have produced about every grade over the years. since this is octaganal stock it is probably some form of stainless or it may be shock reisting steel.
Check to see if it is magnetic. This will rule out the possibility of it being a high temp stainless. After that it is a guess as to what it may be.

I though Sandvik was a steel name manufactured by different companies in sweden. The bar definitelly has some chrome in it, since in over 40 years it has only developed surface rust. But I don't think it is Stainless.
